Mini tooling grooves, threads and bores
Stellram's Ultra-mini programme, consists of replaceable carbide tools that locate in a common steel shank. The tools cover application ranges for grooving, threading and boring in small parts.
The main advantage is that, in the absence of side loads generated by feeding the cutter in the other two orthogonal axes, the rigid milling action allows the tool to cut a larger cross section of metal for a particular feed rate.
The result is efficient milling with minimal tool deflection and vibration combined with increased tool life.
As the milling action is more forgiving of machines that are less rigidly constructed, improved surface finishes are obtained.
Moreover, the technique tends to draw less power than other types of milling for a given metal removal rate, allowing high productivity in shops where the machine tools may have only moderate spindle power and torque.
Stellram's 7791VS products employ a shell mill body, utilising inserts with four cutting edges around the periphery, that takes either an 8mm or 11mm maximum radial cut as it plunges down the wall of a component, which may be vertical, sloping or profiled.
The smaller inserts are used with four cutters ranging from 25mm to 50mm diameter while the larger inserts are employed for the same number of larger mills from 63mm to 125mm diameter.
The manufacturer provides a comprehensive chart giving the height of the scallop created by each cutter for a range of different step-overs.
A wide range of grades is available for diverse applications from aerospace to mould making.
