Ceramic indexable inserts raise turning
speeds

Ceramic indexable inserts made in nine styles for turning exhibit high hardness and toughness, as well as excellent heat resistance, to elevate cutting speeds and cut hardened metals.

Stellram will launch in the UK a range of ceramic indexable inserts for turning which includes more than 300 items across three new grades, said to exhibit high hardness and toughness as well as excellent heat resistance Nine insert styles are available with profiles from high strength round inserts to 35 degrees included angle profiling inserts, providing solutions for many different applications

The higher temperatures that are tolerated by ceramics allow elevated cutting speeds, typically two to seven times higher than with carbide tools, resulting in increased productivity.

Additionally, their hardness and wear resistance enable hard turning of materials up to 60 HRc, or even higher.

SA7402 is a new alumina-based insert designed for finishing and semi-finishing alloyed and hardened steels.

It is also suitable for machining cast iron.

The Al2O3 + TiCN grade is for use on hardened steel and heat treated alloyed steels.

The superior wear resistance makes it a highly productive alternative to cubic boron nitride when cutting conditions are stable.

SA8204 is one of two new Si3N4 (silicon nitride) inserts.

Its high fracture toughness of 6.0N/mm3/2 makes it the preferred grade for rough and interrupted cutting of cast iron and it is also suitable for high speed machining.

In severely interrupted cuts, constant pressure on the edge is necessary to avoid shear forces.

SA8405 is a Si3N4 + TiN grade for rough and interrupted cutting of cast irons, ductile irons and nickel-based alloys.

The addition of TiN gives increased thermal shock resistance and good thermal conductivity.

As with SA8204, this grade has a high degree of edge strength and wear resistance.

Owing to its thermal shock resistance, SA8405 grade may be used with coolant to achieve increased tool life and to stabilise workpiece temperature, particularly when machining nickel-based alloys.
