Packaging has always been perceived as the poor relation of the food industry and this became more evident with the release of The BRC/IoP Packaging Standard in October 2001.
The Standard was developed over a two year period by The British Retail Consortium and The Institute of Packaging in consultation with a wide variety of retailers, food producers, trade associations and packaging companies, and although a common auditing standard was long overdue and widely welcomed by the UK Food Packaging Industry the problem was the lack of practical information and advice available on how to achieve the standard.
Editor of Saferpak Simon Timperley: "I was tasked with achieving The BRC/IoP Packaging Standard for the organisation I worked for and I found it impossible to find any useful, practical information anywhere.
When I looked at the resources available on food safety issues for the "food industry" I quickly realised there was a gap in the market that needed to be filled." The Saferpak Website was twelve months in development and was launched on January 01 2003.
In its short lifespan the website has built a strong readership throughout the world with over 11,000 visitors in May.
Saferpak offers a host of information on the BRC/IoP Packaging Standard, HACCP and hazard analysis as well as quality management tools and techniques.
Visitors can browse the latest packaging quality vacancies and purchase innovative and cost-effective Food Packaging Hygiene Training booklets.
Simon Timperley: "I think the major benefits of the website are the wide-range of unique resources available and the fact that the information on the site is updated daily so there is always something fresh available for our readers.
The coup de gras is the discussion forum, which allows visitors to share best practice with peers and enables packaging industry quality professionals to find the quick, easy and free advice they have been denied for far too long.".
