Agency is adressing scope for a flexible manufacturer to develop gearboxes to suit customer specifications, rather than meet requirements from a standard catalogue.

One of the pioneers of modern planetary gearing in this country, Paul Sixsmith, is behind the marketing of a range of Italian-made gearboxes new to the UK, from Dinamic Oil of Modena Having been involved in power transmission all his working life and seen the planetary drive sector evolve into a mature, mainly mobile market, Sixsmith feels there is scope for a flexible manufacturer able to develop products to suit customer specifications, rather than meet requirements from a standard catalogue

Paul Sixsmith has been appointed the UK Consultant to long-established planetary gearbox manufacturer, Dinamic, and has a direct line to the company's engineering team and production resources.

Paul, who previously worked for such blue-chip planetary drive companies as Brevini and Lohmann + Stolterfoht and now runs his own independent engineering consultancy, promises competitive pricing across the Dinamic range, an extensive choice of standard and special units, and unrivalled technical specification support, based on his own experience and an industry-wide network of specialist contacts.

"Recent moves towards PC-based gearbox selection programs and an over-reliance on catalogue selling means there are fewer and fewer sales engineers in this country with the necessary applications knowledge to feed these systems with the correct data and specify beyond the standard range," says Paul.

"In addition to my own hard-won experience, I am central to an extensive network of engineers, both here and in Italy, and a manufacturing resource willing to go the extra mile." "In particular, I feel there is still under-utlisation of planetary drive technology in the industrial sector, partly because of the focus on volume lines," he continues.

"Already, I have been able to offer a very special 200,000Nm rotating case drive with integral cooling system, on eight weeks delivery, and two standard 50,000Nm units on two weeks delivery.

Plus, in addition to planetary gearboxes, I shall also be looking after Dinamic's range of winches, multi-disk brakes and hydraulic motors." Although the name Dinamic Oil is relatively unknown in the UK, its production history dates back over 30 years and, partly due to a number of strategic acquisitions, has now emerged as a major player in the global planetary gearbox market, operating from large, modern premises in Modena.

More recently, it has restructured its product development and applications side by headhunting some of the top engineers from the planetary sector, combining them with a young, enthusiastic management team who are able to capitalise upon their technical experience.

Dinamic's latest range of planetary gearboxes, including rotating case wheel drives, extends from around 1000Nm through to 540,000Nm continuously-rated, as standard, progressing up to a million Nm if required, with a wide choice of reduction ratios from 3.5 to over 5000.

Its products are used for mobile wheel and track drive applications, with a strong reputation in slewing drives, and the company is currently developing solutions for today's generation of larger mobile plant, expressing particular interest in partnering major OEMs on the development of new products.

Across Europe, the company has been successful in specifying diverse industrial applications, in the sheet metal, iron and steel, plastics processing, water purification, renewable energy, minerals and petro-chemicals sectors, and has a particular reputation for building bigger gearboxes for niche markets like ski lifts and wind generators.

Dinamic also has a proven track record in hydraulic winches, especially bespoke units for individual customers, and produces robust purpose-built models with pulls up to 12,500Nm.

As part of its earliest manufacturing heritage, it also offers hydraulic radial piston motors up to 2150cc/rev and orbital motors up to 383cc/rev.
