Offering improved performance in tough and demanding steel milling operations, Sandvik Coromant's new GC1030 and GC4240 insert grades are the first in a new generation of milling grades purpose designed for modern machining conditions where predictability and security are vital GC1030 is the first choice when machining difficult materials or when operating in unstable conditions where long overhangs and vibration problems may prevail

The improved wear resistance provided by the unique PVD coating promotes its versatility and reliability with the grade particularly suited to smaller cutters or when end milling.

GC4240 is a grade with a completely new substrate and CVD coating offering higher security for trouble free machining.

A versatile grade which can be adapted to various milling operations, it should be considered first choice for shoulder milling and tougher, demanding operations in steel milling or where high metal removal rate is important.

In a growing number of operations, the toughness properties of an indexable insert are playing an increasingly decisive role in producing productivity increases.

Higher security, larger application areas and optimised cutting data are priorities in both turning and milling and the ability of the insert to withstand new operational demands often determines how competitive the machining is.

These new Coromant milling grades are a response to changing steel milling demands where, by virtue that milling is a series of interrupted cuts, entering and leaving the workpiece demands ever increased durability in the insert grade.

Tool concepts used in modern milling have in most cases positive geometries, with sharp and positive-angle edges.

This emphasizes the demand for added toughness.

The new GC1030 and GC4240 are focussed on Sandvik Coromant's CoroMill 390 cutter programme but are equally suited to wider applications where tough grades are needed as back-ups in very severe conditions for face milling operations using cutters such as the CoroMill 245.

In environments where multi-task machines and mill/turn centres predominate, smaller, low powered ISO 40 and HSK 63 machines with high spindle speeds and table feeds are commonplace.

On such machines, the tool faces additional demands, often having to reach into the workpiece or past the chuck.

When tools are longer by design this leads to less stability at the cutting edge which in turn makes demands on the insert-grade toughness.

In such conditions, GC1030 and GC4240 offer performance characteristics to meet and exceed the toughest demands.
