In the CNC machining railroad switch components a tool allowed the drilling of holes to size without additional finishing operations, while a ripper cutter improved surface finishes.

When the producer of high speed moveable crossings, locking and detection systems and CNC machined monobloc tramway switches (points) and removable blades needed to improve productivity, it approached tooling specialist HartHill Developments to investigate The Sheffield-based cutting tool specialist immediately specified tooling from TaeguTec for a number of projects to improve productivity, reduce costs and improve surface finishes

* Drilled holes used as machined - implementing the TaeguTec T-Drill enabled Corus Cogifer to drill holes to size without any additional finishing operations.

Not only did the T-Drill eliminate secondary operations but its four edged inserts gave cost-effective and economical machining, said TaeguTec.

* Ripper cutter - the successful implementation of the T-Drill gave Corus Cogifer confidence in the TaeguTec brand and this led to an enquiry for a special TaeguTec ripping cutter.

Working closely with HartHill Developments, Corus Cogifer designed the 298mm diameter ripping tool.

The drawings were sent to TaeguTec headquarters in Korea where the development team manufactured the first special cutter the company delivered to a UK customer.

As TaeguTec UK General Manager John Conlon commented: "We worked on the project with Corus Cogifer and sent drawings to Korea".

"The TaeguTec technical department in Korea sent us a 298mm diameter cutter that was developed specifically for this one job".

"Following delivery, the cutter was installed and provided immediate results".

Housing 56 inserts, the new ripping cutter has reduced tooling costs and as importantly, it has reduced noise whilst improving productivity.

Machining rails that can be anything upwards of 13m long with cuts up to 80mm deep, metal removal is considerable.

With such high levels of metal removal, tooling costs, noise and vibration play a crucial role in the machining process, saud TaeguTec to manufacturingtalk.com.

Delivered in June 2007, the cutter has performed impeccable since its installation.

It continually takes cuts up to 80mm on a tapered entry.

The efficient tool machines the magnesium alloy steel rails at 240 rev/min with a feed rate of 400mm/min.

Corus Cogifer Switches and Crossings uses a gantry type milling machine, which provides ample rigidity for the cutter to comfortably cut the difficult to machine material.

HartHill development director, Chris Hattersley said: "Since installing the TaeguTec ripping cutter we have reduced tooling costs at Corus Cogifer considerably".

"The rate of insert changeover has been reduced as the TaeguTec inserts offer improved tool life".

"Not only has tool life been improved but the costs have been reduced".

"In comparison to the previous cutter, the inserts are not only more cost effective - they also last a lot longer".

"Beside this, the noise levels and vibration have been reduced dramatically and this not only improves surface finish but it is important to the operator when he is working the machine all day".

* About Corus Cogifer Switches and Crossings - manufacturing components for the rail industry, Corus Cogifer Switches and Crossings Limited, truly is immersed in heavy industrial manufacturing.

A joint venture between Corus and Vossloh Cogifer Switch Systems, the Scunthorpe based company is a developer and manufacturer of market leading rail equipment.
