Four new patents granted for Tornos fixed headstock DECO! Following the phenomenal success of the DECO concept on sliding head and multispindle products, Tornos engineers wanted to develop a DECO incorporating fixed headstock technology The publication of four patents is proof that Tornos never stops researching and developing

The presentation of some of the machine characteristics took place when the company was first quoted on the stock market on the 2nd March 2001.

Tornos indicated at the time that more pertinent information would be made available as soon as the patent formalities were dealt with.

The time has now come.

The four new patents will provide the operators with a large number of benefits: * Symmetrical kinematics, moving fixed headstock on the Z axis (Z2/Z3).

* New type of spindle motorization.

* Ball screws with compensate for impacts and stresses * Incorporated fluid control (air and cutting fluid) All these elements contribute towards making the DECO 42f a high-performance and high precision machine.

The company is convinced that the DECO concept, based on radical new solutions, will have a major impact on the fixed head markets, for capacities up to 42 mm.

The machine will be unveiled at the Hanover EMO, this year, at Tornos stand number b19, hall 21 With its 12 axes (+ two C-axes) and mirrored design, the DECO 42f is quite happy to machine complex operations on both ends of the part.

With axis Z1 supporting the slide Z2, it is possible to work with 2 turning tools simultaneously (for example, roughing-finishing).

This is achieved using the tool holders located on tool platen X1 Y1 and the slide X2 Y2 Z2 - again, also simultaneously machining both sides of the part (see enclosed picture) so 4 tools cutting together The machine structure is fully protected.

The S1 and S4 spindle motors are located directly on the axes [no offset drive].

The stator [motor] and rotor [spindle] systems are completely new and protected.

The motor is positioned [so that it can slide] on a hollow shaft, thereby offering an alternative to the very heavy and expensive conventional motorized spindles.

The DECO 42f has been designed as a very high production output machine, which guarantees precision, even during highly demanding machining operations (very high stresses).

The ball screws are fitted with attenuators and impact compensation devices.

In order to ensure stable and efficient thermal behavior (reaching constant operating temperatures quickly), all fluids [air, oil] will be fully controlled.

The air is forced into the machine by powerful fans.

Along its path, the cutting oil travels in pipe coils.

The air then passes into the machining area and across the base frame.

This air control system also allows the machine to be dry when using emulsions (thereby eliminating any signs of condensation).

The cutting oil is used to cool down the spindles and revolving tools before being sprayed in the machining area.

The oil then flows into the oil tank, whereupon the air pulsating in the machine cools it down again.

If necessary, an optional unit can be used to cool down the oil before it is discharged from the tank (into the airflow).
