High speed spindles can now be selected for CNC turning centres and operate at up to 80,000 rev/min to produce small, highly accurate parts using small diameter milling cuttes and drills.

Tornos has introduced high speed spindles for its turning centres The client application department at Tornos is working with a number of suppliers at present to deliver high speed cutting up to 80,000 rev/min

High speed spindles - also known as electric spindles or high frequency spindles - are particularly well suited to small machining operations that require a high level of precision at high output rates.

High frequency spindles can be fitted for very small tool diameters such as drill bits and milling cutters that do not require large amounts of drive power but require high speeds.

There are several suppliers on the market and Tornos is working closely together with a number of them to present this option to customers.

* Drilling and milling - the various suppliers are proposing different lines of spindles depending upon the work required such as drilling or milling with micro-tools.

This principle can be applied to all Tornos machines and is currently compatible with the Deco, Sigma, MultiDeco and MultiAlpha series machines.

The compact dimensions of the high frequency spindles allow them to be installed on different tool systems in bar-turning operations or in counter operations.

As the Tornos turning centres host a very spacious work area and a wide variety of available tool positions, the spindles can be fitted without impeding the machines ability to accommodate more traditional tool positions.

The new high frequency spindles will allow end users to run at much higher speeds than traditional spindles.

This increased working speed enhances productivity and tool life as well as reducing the level of burring.

A typical example where the spindles will excel is the machining of end operations such as milling a 'Torx' profile.

The new spindles will accommodate tool diameters from 0.015 to 8mm diameter and will have a rotational speed ranging from 10,000 to 80,000 rev/min.

This can be controlled via the TB/Deco machine control for enhanced ease of use.

The new spindles operate a synchronous drive system via independent power supply.

The high frequency spindles are not part of the standard Tornos options but are available upon request and may be proposed in order to optimise machining procedures.
