Business continuity supplier delivers system-wide heterogeneous disaster recovery and replication while decreasing total cost of ownership.

Topio has announced its entrance into the business continuity marketplace with a new approach to enterprise-class data replication The company, which was formed by a seasoned team of enterprise storage and data replication experts, is driven by the market need for cost effective, consistent, open, and scalable data replication

In separate news, the company unveiled its first product, SANSafe, which enables system-wide consistent disaster recovery over long distance, and supports heterogeneous SAN environments, storage subsystems, direct-attach storage (DAS), and storage virtualisation schemes exploiting all networking environments, especially IP.

SANSafe is available today for Solaris and Windows 2000 environments.

"We established Topio because we had seen the frustration enterprise business continuity planners and IT professionals experienced with expensive, proprietary and complex data replication solutions that do not deliver on the promise of data consistency and data reliability, nor support a truly heterogeneous environment," said Yoram Novick, founder and CEO of Topio.

"Our goal is to deliver data replication and disaster recovery solutions that overcome these critical limitations, while providing long distance capability and a significant reduction in disaster recovery Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Customers today are asking for replication and disaster recovery solutions that are not limited to a single vendor's products".

Storage software research director for IDC, Bill North, said: "Topio's design for system-wide data replication across multiple hardware and software platforms promises to deliver consistent disaster recovery without vendor lock-in".

He continued: "Topio is positioned to help meet the growing demand for long-distance data replication and recovery for heterogeneous environments".

Topio is lead by experts with extensive experience in the area of mission-critical storage, data replication, and disaster recovery.

Together, the team has submitted, over time, more than 30 storage-related patents.

Topio's senior management team includes Yoram Novick, founder and CEO, who was formerly an executive at IBM Storage Research; Eric Herzog, vice president of marketing, who was formerly vice president of marketing at several storage companies including, IBM's Storage Technology Division, Mylex, and Streamlogic; and Frank Lord, vice president of sales, who most recently served as the vice president of sales at storage software provider, sanrise, and has held sales management positions at Cisco Systems and ATandT.

Topio has received its first round venture funding from Sequoia Capital, the venture capital firm that helped launch Cisco Systems, Network Appliance, Yahoo!, Flextronics, and Oracle.

Topio's board of directors is composed of skilled industry leaders and includes Shmuel Levy, partner, Sequoia Capital; Mark Santora, senior vice president, Network Appliance; and Yoram Snir, director of business development, Cisco Systems.

"Topio embodies many of the same qualities of our portfolio companies that have grown into major players," said Shmuel Levy, partner at Sequoia Capital.

"The company is focused on a large, high growth market opportunity, has built a product driven by customer needs, and the team has proven its ability to execute by having SANSafe ready for shipment today".

He concluded: "We are confident that Topio will become a substantial player in the disaster recovery arena over the next few years".
