Fronius innovation shifts the limits Circulating process tape instead of wear-inducing electrodes characterise the completely new robot welding gun for resistance spot welding.

The process tapes used in the DeltaSpot resistance spot welding system from Fronius protect the electrodes and the workpieces, prevent spatter and set new quality standards Endless spot welds, all of a consistently high quality, over a number of shifts are at last a reality

The process is characterised by absolutely repeatable welding points and, compared to conventional resistance spot welding, a significant increase in the size of the process window.

This innovative resistance spot welding system will be of special interest to the automobile industry and its suppliers.

The process is suitable for metals such as steel and aluminium, for coated sheet steel and for joining coated sheet steel and aluminium.

DeltaSpot also facilitates accurate spot welding of three-sheet joins.

Major efficiency improvements, in addition to practically 100% availability over several production shifts without having to change electrodes, are now apparent from application to application: the requirements are spatter-free joins and a clean work environment.

The innovative functional principle makes it possible.

With conventional systems there is direct contact between the electrodes and the surfaces of the materials being welded.

It is this that causes most of the unpleasant side effects.

Not with DeltaSpot.

A process tape, made of a material suitable for the application in hand, passes between the electrodes and the sheets.

On the one hand this transfers the welding current, on the other it protects the contact surfaces of the electrodes.

The resistance generated by the process tape can be used as an additional source of heat for the weld.

This reduces the required welding current, particularly when welding highly-conductive materials like aluminium.

The process tape moves automatically to its next position after every weld, ie it is constantly welding a fresh contact surface.

There are other significant benefits in addition to availability, reliability and a spatter-free environment: quality management and documentation become much easier and thus more accurate.

As each welding point leaves a "fingerprint" on the process tape, an assessment of its quality is much more revealing.

This satisfies the requirement of the automobile industry for 100% monitoring of welding points.

DeltaSpot shifts the limits of conventional resistance spot welding and extends into previously uncharted territory.

This development will give new impetus to what has become a stagnant spot welding environment.
