The Lurgan-based company is set to profit from the new contract and will be developing sophisticated diagnostic test instruments for US-based Doble Engineering, located in Boston, Massachusetts.
The test units are to be used in power distribution applications and will be manufactured in the UK for sale throughout Europe and Asia.
Trade Partners UK worked closely with Invest NI's trade team, to help broker the partnership between SMTEK and Doble Engineering through its International Partnership Programme.
The programme allowed SMTEK to participate in a business mission to Boston, which was assisted by commercial staff at the British Consulate in the city, to develop its presence in this important regional market.
Commenting on the contract, Kieran Leonard, SMTEK managing director said, "The agreement with Doble Engineering is an important stage in our strategy to grow our business in target markets through partnerships with manufacturers requiring electronics expertise and expert services.
Invest NI together with Trade Partners UK have been of enormous benefit to us and it's highly unlikely that we would have found a partner of this quality without their help," added Mr Leonard.
International partnerships or 'virtual manufacturing', as it is increasingly being penned, is the cornerstone of SMTEK's strategic plan to develop its business.
This business framework relies on firms such as SMTEK providing Contract Electronic Manufacturing (CEM) services to product developers allowing them to focus on their core competencies of research, development and marketing.
SMTEK Europe employs around 150 people in CEM services.
The company's offerings include full design, printed circuit board assembly, full system integration assembly (box build) and full logistic support world wide for the telecommunications, industrial and medical sectors.
