A machine for producing five-sided, complex or multi-featured components in a single operation directly out of barstock has been developed by Hermle and is now available in the UK.

A new concept machine for producing five-sided, complex or multi-featured components in a single operation directly out of barstock has been developed by Hermle and is now available in the UK from Traub Heckert (UK) of Brackley The Hermle S100M machine, which uses short bar lengths up to 1100mm and between 15mm and 100mm diameter, has the capability to call upon up to 40 tools from its tool magazine and apply up to five-axes of movement to perform turning, milling, drilling, boring or tapping operations

The machine specification includes a 40kW, 16,000 revs/min tooling spindle which is fully integrated with an up to 30 revs/min workpiece carrier and chuck with C-axis and a swivelling B-axis for component positioning.

The machine concept is based on producing components directly from short bar lengths which are fed from a seven position cradle magazine that also allows new bar lengths to be replenished into the system via a loading station.

The bar is then fed into the hollow spindle of a patented, three-axis workpiece carrier with a three-jaw chuck and is fed to the programmed machining length which can be up to 600mm.

The workpiece carrier is mounted on a vertical slide (X-axis) and is able to swivel (B-axis) through 270 degrees to present the bar for machining.

The hollow spindle and chuck assembly is also able to rotate (C-axis) at up to 30 revs/min driven by a 340 Nm high torque motor.

The two-axis tool spindle head operates on a separate horizontal slideway with a cross travel (Y-axis) of + 140mm and forward and reverse stroke (Z-axis) of 500mm.

In operation, the Siemens S840D control synchronises the axis movements between the workpiece carrier and tool spindle to achieve five-sided machining of a component with rapid traverses in X, Y and Z of 50m/min and accelerations of 5m/sec squared.

Once a component has been machined it is parted-off from the bar and deposited in a workpiece retriever.

The bar is then fed out to the programmed length and the cycle restarted.

The Hermle S100M machine is highly stable with a mineral cast base giving high levels of vibration absorption and temperature stability for extended unmanned running.

It also provides the ideal platform for high levels of stock removal, long tool life and high degrees of accuracy and surface finish.

The S100M also features electronic compensation for temperature and tool breakage monitoring with internal coolant supply and swarf conveyor.
