It was a dedicated interest in motorcycles that led Mark Youngman to purchase a Pinacho Cobra 180 CNC lathe from Traub Heckert UK and selected the Brackley based agent because of the high levels of support available to his small business, which now produces precision parts for owners of classic motorcycles Having set up Consort Precision in a purpose-built workshop in Lowestoft, Suffolk from the proceeds of the sale of a Harley Davidson motorcycle, he lovingly rebuilt from scratch six years ago, the company has expanded and now has four other machines installed to produce mostly motorcycle components

The portal design Hermle C1200 can be specified with either a rigid table or NC swivelling rotary table to cater for complex aircraft type components or mould and die work.
What was originally an after work job, often extending well into the early hours, Mark Youngman has developed the business into a full time occupation and at the start of 2001 took the plunge and left his full time position to concentrate on making Consort Precision a success.
He describes how the business has grown to such an extent that he needed a lathe with a CNC capability to replace a manual machine that he had been using.
"After looking at the other machines and suppliers in the market I decided that the Pinacho Cobra best met my needs of quality and capability at an affordable price.

TWR turns to Traub-Heckert for machining centre
To produce the key components for such finely tuned power units calls for quality engineered machine tools and here, TWR has installed a Hermle C800U five-axis machining centre
However, just as important, I needed a supplier such as Traub Heckert which could provide me with the spares, service and technical back-up that, as a sole proprietor, is essential." The Pinacho Cobra is now producing precision turned parts for owners of classic motorcycles as well as replica models of off-shore components for the oil industry.
Working in a wide variety of materials from plastics, stainless steel and bronze to produce parts as diverse as fasteners of 6mm diameter with fine threads to components up to 100mm, Mark Youngman finds the Cobra is holding tolerances of + 0.005mm.
His batch sizes vary between two and 300 but it is on repeat components that he is making massive time savings on the Cobra over the manual machine that he used previously.
The Pinacho Cobra 180 installed at Consort Precision has 1000mm between centres and 360mm swing over bed.
For Mark Youngman, most important is the flexibility of the control which allows manual operation through electronic handwheels, the pulling-in of canned machining cycles from the control software and the high resolution graphics support.
With the on-board profile editor, a program can be automatically created which is ideal for machining under CNC further parts to the same cycle and dimensions.
