Y-axis enabled centre to do complex work
Using a Y-axis turret cross-feed in a CNC mill-turn centre, Salcey Precision Engineering tackled the machining of a one-off highly complex aluminium mould for race car differential casings.
Having just installed the latest Traub TNA 300 mill/turn centre with a Y-axis turret cross-feed, one of the first jobs Salcey Precision Engineering tackled was the machining of a one-off highly complex aluminium mould for a F1 company from which it could produce race car differential casings The mould, produced from an aluminium billet some 300mm diameter and 300mm long, was mill/turned on the universal 11kW lathe purchased from Traub Heckert UK of Brackley

The portal design Hermle C1200 can be specified with either a rigid table or NC swivelling rotary table to cater for complex aircraft type components or mould and die work.
Says managing director David Horn of the Hartwell, Northants company: "The next job was a very complicated development valve for another racing car firm which proves that since installing the TNA 300, it has certainly lived up to our decision to buy." Salcey Precision employs 30 people and produces small precision parts for motor sport and aerospace type companies.
Having been in business for some 28 years and built-up a demanding customer base, Salcey has invested in high precision machinery which is replaced on a regular basis.
The Traub replaced a four-axis lathe which was beginning to cause problems due to downtime.
Says David Horn: "We looked at the market in depth but when we compared the overall package from Traub Heckert, it was clearly the best, even against our regular suppliers of machine tools." He follows on to explain: "When we are machining parts from a wide range of diverse materials such as titanium and aluminium you need a quality machine and when you are talking of holding tolerances as tight as 0.01mm on a regular basis you need a rigid and very repeatable piece of equipment.
Here the Traub TNA 300 certainly fits the bill," he said.
