The rapidly expanding Charlton Kings Engineering Group has just announced an investment of GBP1m in brand new plant and machinery, including Trumpf laser profilers, to help it meet customer demand The move is a further reflection of the company's expansion plans which have included taking over Birmingham-based MC Engineering - now CKE (Midlands) - which has a 100-strong workforce

Two laser heads are three times better than one
In theory a twin-head laser profiler produces double the output of a 'normal' single-head machine.
Except in this case, it is around three times as productive!
The recently purchased machines - a CO2 laser cutting centre and CNC sheet metal machining centre from world-leading manufacturer, Trumpf, have been installed at CKE's Birmingham site.
The two CO2 laser cutting centres, Trumpf Trumatic L 4030's, combine precision mechanical engineering and state-of-the-art laser and control technology.
It was Trumpf who back in 1987 launched the first ever flatbed laser cutting centre, and these machines have since gone on to revolutionise sheet metal fabrication.

Trumpf to show fastest CNC punching machine

Laser and punch boost switchgear output
The bottom line at Lucy Switchgear is that one laser and one punch have enabled the company to produce 10,000 parts/week, compared with some 6,000 parts/week from the old two-punch facility.
The Trumatic L 4030 operates according to the 'flying optics' principle where the laser beam moves over the working area, allowing high processing speeds to be achieved independent of material weight.
The laser beam can cut through a wide variety of different materials, both thick and thin, whether the part geometry is simple or highly complex.
Everything is machined ready for assembly, and the ToPs programming system provides additional support as it 'knows' how different materials have to be processed.
User-friendly, with straightforward programming this highly sophisticated machine is simple to operate, while the quick-change system allows the cutting head to be exchanged in a matter of seconds.
CKE's second purchase from Trumpf is a Trumatic 500 Rotation CNC sheet metal machining centre, for punching, nibbling and forming with rotation of all tools.
The Trumatic 500R 1300 is specifically designed to meet the demands of today's markets for products that require short development cycles and typically have a limited product life.
It offers the fastest production times, with short set-up times, reduced tooling costs, and high component quality.
The Trumatic 500R has a Bosch CC 220 S control, automatic tool changer with 18 tools and two clamps, and a working range (X x Y) of 2535 x 1280mm.
Other features include: * Max.
punching force 220kN.
* Max sheet thickness 8mm.
* Max workpiece weight 200kg.
* Max punching diameter 76.2mm.
* Positioning accuracy +/-0.1mm.
* Repeatability +/-0.03mm.
CKE supplies a wide range of products to the automotive and catering industries - from component parts to complete enclosures, ready painted, assembled and tested.
The new machines will enable CKE to meet the demands of customers and to keep one step ahead with new technology.
Says David Harrison, the chairman and owner of CKE: "CKE is a company based on quality, service and good engineering and we have always believed that an ongoing programme of investment is necessary to move us progressively forward.
The level of investment we have just announced is a mark of our determination to continue to provide the quality engineering our customers demand." CKE has a turnover in excess of GBP11 million, and the investment in new plant at CKE (Midlands) Ltd is part of a recent overall investment programme of GBP2 million.
Its multi-million pound purpose-built premises at Cheltenham and Birmingham total 130,000ft2, providing advanced production capabilities.
As a leading supplier of components and assemblies, fabrication is the core of its business.
CKE also provides turnkey fabrication solutions from initial design and specification through to sourcing of raw materials, manufacture and assembly.
Its facilities include CAD/CAM design, CNC laser cutting, shearing, and CNC punching, bending, forming, welding and finishing. Request a free brochure from Trumpf ...
