Forces combine to laser sinter steels
and alloys
Laser systems supplier and a developer of fast prototyping systems are cooperating to develop laser-sintering of complex parts in a variety of metals including tool steels, SS and titanium.
TRUMPF develops in cooperation with EOS a system for Direct Metal Laser-Melting Trumpf, the world-leading manufacturer of industrial lasers and laser systems, and EOS, world leader in laser-sintering and leading European manufacturer of systems for rapid prototyping and manufacturing, have signed a cooperation agreement based on their cross licence agreement for Direct Metal Laser-Melting The aim of the cooperation is to develop a perfected production system specially for Direct Metal Laser-Melting, based on a secure patent position and using the combined know-how of the partners

Heavy duty laser profiler works through the night

Two laser heads are three times better than one
In theory a twin-head laser profiler produces double the output of a 'normal' single-head machine.
Except in this case, it is around three times as productive!
Direct Metal Laser-Melting is a variation of EOS' direct metal laser-sintering (DMLS), in which metal powder free of binder or fluxing agent is completely melted by a scanning laser beam to build up three-dimensional objects with properties of the original material.
The process gives designers the possibility to build parts of almost any complexity in a wide range of metal materials.
EOS' DMLS is an already established technology for rapid prototyping and manufacturing and is perfectly complemented by Trumpf Direct Metal Laser-Melting.
The new technology will further broaden the application field of rapid manufacturing.
Trumpf and EOS see a wide application potential, mainly in series tool production and in the production of one-offs and small series in the fields of ultra-lightweight structures and medical devices.
The Direct Metal Laser-Melting method is based on process developments carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT), Aachen (Germany), which will continue to be involved in the further technology development of Trumpf and EOS.
To date, complex and high-quality parts have been produced from the following materials: tool steel (1.2343), titanium (Ti-Al6V4) and stainless steel (1.4404).
Further materials are currently being investigated. Request a free brochure from Trumpf ...
