Thorworld Industries has installed a mobile yardramp system for carpet tile manufacturer, Sanquhar Tile Services, to overcome their lack of loading bay.

Carpet tile manufacturer, Sanquhar Tile Services, has overcome the problem of not having a loading bay at one of its factories and boosted efficiency by installing a mobile yardramp system from Thorworld Industries Each month it receives a container load of specialised needle-felt material from abroad, consisting of 60 rolls, each 4m wide and 100m long

The rolls previously had to be offloaded at a nearby company site that had a loading bay.

They were then re-loaded on to a hired-in flatbed truck, a dozen at a time, and driven to the main production plant.

Designed and manufactured by Thorworld and supplied through their agent, Clark Handling ., the unloading system consists of a Thorworld Deluxe mobile yardramp, shortened from the usual 12.2m length to 9m to meet space restriction issues.

Bolted to the ground, it has built-in high side rails and curbs for added safety.

Strongly constructed using the latest solid beam technique, with a steel superstructure, Thorworld ramps have a serrated open grid deck for positive traction in all weather conditions.

A hand-operated hydraulic pump raises the ramp to the required height and it fully meets the latest European safety standards and directives.

The Thorworld system features a counterbalanced drawbridge type dock leveller measuring 2m x 2m, with a maximum capacity of 6,000kg, and a platform at the top of the ramp measuring 2.4m x 3.6m and 1.3m high.

A 2.5 tonne forklift fitted with a special boom attachment drives up the ramp into the container to remove the needle-felt rolls one at a time and place them inside the factory.

According to Sanquhar, taking the yardramp route rather than building a loading bay has resulted in considerable savings and greater efficiency.

Said production director David Lind: "The cost of the ramp system was two-thirds the price of building a loading bay, which would have entailed considerable excavation work and all the associated disruption.

We are also benefiting from on-going savings after doing away with the double-handling of the needle-felt rolls".

Based in Dumfriesshire, the company produces around 250,000 carpet tiles each week.

Thorworld mobile ramps are available with capacities of 7,000 kg, 10,000 kg, 12,000 kg and 15,000 kg, and are supplied for purchase or rental, on a sale or return basis, through the company's specialist RentARamp operation.

Thorworld Industries provides a one-stop, single source for a wide range of high quality loading and unloading equipment and loading bay accessories and safety aids, such as: dock shelters and seals, dock levellers, dock plates and boards, dock and vehicle bumpers, wheel chocks, modular loading docks and mobile yardramps, together with the Truckloada mobile yardlift, the Dockloada scissor lift platform, and a new low cost Economy ramp.

The company is firmly established as a leading supplier to the loading bay and materials handling sectors, with numerous prestigious customers throughout the UK and mainland Europe in distribution, logistics, transport, retailing, food, drink, manufacturing, recycling and the service industries.

Thorworld will be featuring their comprehensive range of loading and unloading equipment at 'Materials Handling Live' (Stand M300, Stoneleigh Park Exhibition and Conference Centre, near Coventry, 22-23 May 2007).
