On 19 April 2005, a new directive designated 2005/27/EC came into force amending directive 2003/97/EC, which superseded directive 71/127/EEC.The new directive makes it mandatory for, indirect vision devices to be extended to a wider range of N2 vehicles.

N2 vehicles are goods vehicles with a maximum weight between 3.5 and 12 tonnes.

The rationale of the directive is to reduce the blind spot, which has been the cause of numerous accidents.

The introduction of new technology and innovation in the field of indirect vision devices has made the review of the existing directives necessary.

The amendments to the existing directives are particularly pertinent to N2 vehicles, where it is now mandatory to fit class IV wide-angle mirrors to vehicles that have a cabin similar to N3 vehicles (Goods vehicles with a maximum weight over 12 tonnes).

The new directive also stipulates that vehicles having seats with a fixed seat-back angle would not be able to fulfil the standard requirements.

However, a correction for those kinds of vehicles should therefore be integrated in the directive.

The new directive will become law in all the European Union member states by 19 October 2005.
