UGS Velocity Series enables collaborative design management for Siemens power generation unit

UGS, a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, has announced that Siemens Gas Turbine Parts Limited (SGTP), a company in the Siemens Power Generation Group, has selected and successfully implemented Teamcentre Express as a PLM backbone Teamcentre Express is the collaborative product data management (cPDM) component of the UGS Velocity Series portfolio, the industry's first comprehensive, preconfigured portfolio of digital product design, analysis, manufacturing, and data management software for the PLM mid-market

UGS Velocity Series portfolio also includes Solid Edge, Femap and NX CAM Express.

Initial implementation took just weeks, as SGTP ramps up its first production facilities in Shanghai, China.

The company was established in 2005 as a unit of Siemens' power generation group in China, to supply high-quality precision components for powerful land-based gas turbines.

"The UGS Velocity Series is about speed," said Tom Stenger, division manager technology, Siemens Gas Turbine Parts .

"Taking just weeks, Teamcentre Express is the fastest software implementation we've ever had".

"Implementation in the early stage of our engineering work enables us to prepare all localised documents for our high-tech components".

"The workflow function ensures transparency and quality to deliver the right documents on time to the production and other departments".

Enabling efficient cross-border collaboration among mid-sized companies for complex engineering tasks is a critical task in sustaining economic growth in China.

"China's demands for efficient and environmentally friendly methods of power generation have never been greater," said Chuck Yuan, vice president of Greater China Operations, UGS.

"Today, it's possible to manufacture the advanced components for such systems in China itself".

"PLM software is an essential enabler of this precision engineering task".

"The functionality, flexibility and speed of implementation for UGS Velocity Series products makes us Siemens Gas Turbine Parts 's partner of choice for proven, open and scalable PLM solutions".

As a start-up operation, SGTP needed an efficient system to manage workflow, bills of materials (BOM) and related drawings, and data from its headquarters in Germany.

The company used Teamcentre Express to set up a single-source data management system with minimal need for customisation and more than 90 percent of Teamcentre Express functions exploitd "out-of-the-box".

"UGS Velocity Series products improve the speed, efficiency, and quality of the engineering environment at a low cost of ownership through three important features," said Bruce Boes, vice president for Velocity Series Products, UGS.

"First, the portfolio components are offered standalone or integrated allowing customers to start with their greatest need and expand without worrying about compatibility".

"Second, UGS Velocity Series provides preconfigured best practices in a Windows environment, which enables easy implementation, training and usability".

"Finally, it is completely scalable to our full PLM solutions portfolio as a company's needs grow".

In order to help accelerate PLM capabilities amongst mid-market manufacturers in Asia Pacific, UGS formed the Velocity Series Consortium with HP and Intel.

The Consortium is dedicated to the development of solutions and services helping manufacturers reduce costs and minimise barriers to innovation.
