No blues sung at subcontract machinists'
Such has been the upsurge in the fortunes of Unicut Precision that July and August have set record sales and profit levels for its precision sub-con tract machining business.
Big order led to new machine purchases
Following the winning of a 12 month contract for three million components from an American fastener company, Unicut Precision immediately ordered two CNC sliding head automatic lathes.
The system has also been structured for further expansion later in the year to accommodate part scheduling, machine performance monitoring and remote access for information update and maintenance.
As joint managing director Jason Nicholson explains: "It is a step by step growth into improved systemisation.
Our immediate need was to prevent duplication of effort and paperwork while creating an on-line reporting system to support the ever-growing number of batches of work we are processing and rapidly shortening lead times customers are demanding." Already geared up for fast machine changeover and having the capability for customers to directly access production data through the Internet, Unicut Precision can now build-up files for quotations, materials and tooling which can be immediately called upon when orders are received.
Material stores, stock holding, subcontract processes such as heat-treatment and plating are now all integrated into route card information for on-line access.
In addition, on-line inspection report data, details relative to batch splitting and automatic printing of part identification labels, automatic integration with Sage accounting software for delivery notes and invoicing is now active.
According to Charles Kenny, joint managing director: "Already major benefits have been accrued as we can very quickly access information and make decisions based on real time factual data.
Everyone in the company now has Intranet communications for filing job notes between shifts and exchanging setting information which also gives us accurate records of what is happening throughout the business.".
