To raise productivity a small precision parts machinist has invested some GBP 25,000 in an integrated central communications and production management system.
No blues sung at subcontract machinists'
Such has been the upsurge in the fortunes of Unicut Precision that July and August have set record sales and profit levels for its precision sub-con tract machining business.
The system which is fully integrated with an identical set up at the Welwyn Garden City subcontract machine shop of Unicut Precision installed in 2004, will enable remote access at both sites to all files.
As a result, all production operations are now fully integrated between the two sites for quotation, order processing, purchases, deliveries and stocks of material and tooling, CNC, programmes, drawings and work scheduling.
In addition invoicing, operational performance and traceability is incorporated throughout the business which joint managing director Jason Nicholson maintains: "Accurate planning on a day to day basis and in particular for the longer term, is helped because decisions can be made against factual information." There are servers now installed at each site with nine terminals at Welwyn and six at A J Clarke to provide setter access to pertinent information such as drawings, tooling, programs and material with the production scheduling depicting the next three jobs for each machine.
At Welwyn a complete system for bar storage and transport to each machine has now been installed which, through Datatrack is monitored against order and delivery and is organised for placement alongside the appropriate machine in time for setting up for production.
Unicut Precision acquired A J Clarke in November, 2005 and has already installed a new Citizen L20 VIII CNC sliding head auto to replace five traditional cam autos.
A J Clarke employs 14 people and Unicut 17.
