A study reveals that most Authorities Having Jurisdiction from the United States prefer the UL Mark as a guarantee of safety.

One of the main goals of the 2006 Brand Value Survey was to determine the competitive position of the different certification organisations by measuring the key drivers that cause Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ's) to accept a safety certification mark 800 officials from 4 regulated industrial segments were surveyed Guildford, 16 February 2007 - A 2006 study conducted among 800 regulator officials, members of professional safety organisations, working in 4 regulated industries in the US revealed that UL is the most valued certification organisation.

The survey participants belonged to 4 critical industry segments: Electrical, Building, Fire Protection and Public Health.

They were all members of the professional safety associations governing their specific industry: the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the International Code Council (ICC), and the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA).

Results show that 90% of Electrical, Building and Fire regulators are extremely or very familiar with UL.

From this percentage, 97% are comfortable accepting the UL Mark without additional steps and 89% selected UL as one of the brands they prefer to work with.

Considering all industry segments, respondents are most familiar with UL, with 80% reporting to be extremely or very familiar.

The certification organisation that follows only accounts for 33% of the responses.

"Our brand affinity is very high for various reasons, first of all, UL was founded in 1894 with the clear mission to assess and guarantee the electrical safety of products subject to causing fire.

"Since then, we have worked and will continue to work closely with North America's Authorities Having Jurisdiction in order to preserve Public Safety" states Carlos Correia, UL's Vice-President and Managing Director of Consumer and Industrial Products in Europe and Latin America.

"The fact that for 97% of participants, the sole presence of a UL Mark on a product is enough guarantee of safety, significantly facilitates the commercialisation of any UL certified product to North America".

Research Objectives The 2006 AHJ Brand Value Survey was conducted among Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), which are the city and town inspection authorities who enforce installation codes.

The Blackstone Consulting Group carried out the study completely anonymous.

The main objectives were: Understand AHJ's acceptance and preference in terms of safety certification providers Determine the business behaviours that are important to AHJ's when working with a safety testing and certification organisation Provide a baseline for measuring the strength of UL's position as a leader on safety matters among AHJ's.

Measure how UL compares with other leading safety organizations Identify any unmet needs - leadership opportunities - that could be leveraged to strengthen UL's relationship with AHJ's.
