Powerful machining centre turns and
mills
A powerful, portal-type vertical turning and milling centre, for five-sides machining, has its pallet changer located sideways at the rear to improve operator access to the machining area.
First machine of this type installed in the UK is at Alstom Power UK in Rugby Based on the proven Unisign portal machining centre Uniport 6000, Unicom 6000 enables powerful milling and drilling operations to be combined with vertical turning

Complex wing parts machined at high speeds
Weston EU was looking for a universal machining centre to produce high machining accuracy, present the cutters at different angles and follow contour paths to machine complex wing sections.
The turning station is fully integrated into the machine's moving table (Y-axis) and it is equipped with an interface that can receive pallets of 1250mm or 1600mm diameter.
The maximum swing with either pallet size is 2000mm.
Powerful vertical turning capabilities - the carousel turning station is powered by two drive units; each one consisting of an integrated water cooled main drive motor with two-stage gearbox.

Large defence industry fabrications machined
Two large and powerful gantry-type machining centres have been recently installed in the UK for machining large welded constructions for the defence industry.
The carousel turning station offers 70kW of power and 25,000Nm of torque.
Maximum speed of rotation is 450 rpm (with o1.250mm pallet) or 400 rpm (with o1.600mm pallet).
Next to the turning operations, the Unicom 6000 turning station can also be used as a C-axis rotary table.
For turning operations, a fully automatic spindle loaded turning tool adapter is automatically mounted to the spindle nose of the ram.
This turning tool adapter can be automatically indexed in the horizontal plane in 90deg intervals.
Tooling interface for turning tools is Capto, Size C6, and the tools can be automatically loaded from designated pockets inside the tool magazine.
Powerful five-sides machining - the ram of Unicom 6000 incorporates a powerful vertical spindle of 36kW and ISO-50 tool interface.
The integrated two-stage gearbox allows for spindle speeds up to 6.000 rpm (9.000 rpm as option) and maximum torque of 720Nm.
For machining operations in the horizontal plane, the Unisign right angle head is available.
This right angle head offers the same power and torque as the vertical main spindle.
In combination with the C-Axis rotary table it allows milling and drilling operations at any angle to the X-Z plane.
The right angle head can be automatically picked up from a pickup station on the vertical column of the machine.
Automatic tool change is performed by two designated tilting pockets inside the tool magazine.
Automatic pallet changer - with traditional pallet changer machines, the pallet changer is located at the front of the machine where it partially blocks the operator's view on the machining process.
With Unicom 6000 the pallet changer is located sideways at the rear of the machine.
With this set-up the front face of the machine is freely available for the operator.
The operator access door with large window is located close to the spindle to ensure an undisturbed view on the machining process.
The control panel is located easily accessible near the operator access door.
Guarding section - the guarding of Unicom 6000 is fully enclosed to offer a clean and operator friendly working environment.
Sandwich plating is used to dramatically reduce the noise of heavy chips that hit the guarding section during turning operations.
The operator access door is located close to the spindle and the large window offers excellent view on the machining process.
