Before selecting the best CAD/CAM system for purpose, a German sheet metal stamping company set up a clearly defined profile for company and product requirements Flexibility, quick implementation and an outstanding cost-performance ratio are all targets obtained by Teckentrup, Germany, after implementing VISI-Series as a fundamental part of the CAD/CAM process chain

"We have a clearly defined objective of becoming a leading technological manufacturer of die stamped, punched, and deep-drawn components.

We have modern machinery and we heavily invest in technology to be above the know-how level of our competition.

If we are able to solve today the problems of tomorrow, we will still be in the game the day after tomorrow," was how Thomas Volborth, managing director, described the strategy of Herscheider Teckentrup and Co KG.

The main focus during the implementation of this strategy lies in the technology center, which has over 50 people employed in development, tool construction and in the quality department.

The technology centre provides Teckentrup with the 'in house' know-how and expertise for automotive parts within the engine, brakes, transmission, steering and suspension ranges.

The high precision and tight tolerance requirements of the automotive industry ensure that Teckentrup build a close partnership with their customers.

"As a company, we must adapt to the customer not only in the human and technical aspects of a project, we must also understand the language of the customer in terms of software technology," explained Volborth.

This philosophy led Teckentrup, after an extensive benchmark analysis to invest in the VISI-Series CAD/CAM solution from Vero International.

Before selecting a CADCAM system, a clearly defined profile was set for both the company and product requirements.

For Teckentrup, a long-term co-operation with a respectable and reliable partner was imperative.

The software had to be able to interface directly with the multiple CAD systems of its customers and with the existing CAM system within the machining department.

Currently, Teckentrup's engineers are responsible for the development of the construction unit, designing the tool and coordinating all internal operational sequences in tool construction, production and the quality department.

For this reason Teckentrup required a powerful but easy to use system.

"Without doubt, VISI-Series offered us the 'roundest' integral package," said Carsten Schmidthaus, construction and development project manager.

It was possible to utilise the CAD/CAM solution on the very first day on practical applications, as Schmidthaus confirmed: "One of the most impressive recommendations I can make is from the time when we first started.

Although at that time we had little experience in the 3D area, by the second week, we had already designed our first complete tool in 3D with no errors.

The fact that any potential issues can be visualised in 3D, greatly reduces the possibility of potential problems further down the design path." Shortly after the initial implementation of our first three VISI workstations, a fourth and fifth VISI workstation were installed in the construction area.

A sixth workstation was also installed - this time however directly in the tool construction area.

While Teckentrup has installed its own CAM systems in the lathe and EDM areas, these are supplied with data directly from VISI.

"Dedicated applications relevant to our industry such as VISI-Progress and VISI-MFR have allowed us to close the CAD/CAM Process chain at Teckentrup for the first time.

We have never regretted the decision to move to VISI-Series, because the system allows us to work exclusively in 3D.

And this brings us a complete set of advantages during the implementation of our original strategy.

To become a leading technological manufacturer of die stamped, punched, and deep-drawn components," summarized Volborth.
