Metal cleaner cuts Trichloroethylene use by 98%
A state of the art metal cleaning machine has enabled BNFL to cut usage of Trichloroethylene by 98 per cent, saving approximately GBP 40,000. Significant savings continue to be made daily.
The system was installed at G and J Hall's Sheffield plant in October to comply with solvent legislation and to provide optimum health and safety for operators using re-classified trichloroethylene.
Ray Booth, Works Director, G and J Hall, said: "With the technical and professional support of Virotec we were able to carry out a detailed assessment of our degreasing needs and change our cleaning system to achieve a significant reduction in solvent consumption.
"On advice from Virotec, we have also changed our degreasing process to stacked liquid and vapour immersion which has provided substantial improvement in our degreasing results." The Smart system was installed to replaced a well used, outdated open top degreaser.
The new system uses less than one tonne of Volatile Organic Compound per annum.
This means that the G and J Hall operation is exempt from the Solvent Emissions Directive Regulations, avoiding the cost of emission monitoring and abatement maintenance.
A fully enclosed facility, the Smart system features an hermetically sealing process door which is interfaced with the ventilation and outer enclosure door to provide control over airborne emissions.
The enclosed nature of the system, with semi-automatic controls, provides optimum safety for the operator.
Safety is further enhanced by the use of closed loop solvent management technology for handling fresh and waste solvent product.
