The I-SYS biodisk contains 32 separate test chambers, each of which can carry out a unique reaction.
The test liquid is injected into the central test chamber of the biodisk, where capillary forces then draw it through micro channels into the 32 surrounding analysis chambers.

Stereo zoom microscope has LED illumination
A stereo zoom microscope with LED illumination does not use conventional eyepieces, but instead an optical viewing head, which reduces eye fatigue and gives greater freedom of head movement.
The biodisk is moulded in a clear plastic, which once used will be studied by an automated inspection station, where each analysis chamber will be studied for colour and contrast changes.
The clear plastic makes inspection of the manufactured component more challenging, as it has been designed to be as clear and contrast free as possible.
The solution chosen by I-SYS Automation Technology is the Lynx stereo microscope from Vision Engineering.
Lynx presents a bright, clear image through the innovative eyepieceless viewing head.
This image allows the operator to clearly see the features within the clear plastic moulding.
In particular, the micro channels can be inspected to ensure that the sample liquid will flow smoothly through the disk during use.
This Lynx system is operated with a 20x stereo magnification, allowing the operator to clearly see small features on a low contrast component.
The microscope is mounted on a boom fixture which allows for simple manipulation of the components under the optics, as well as a large working area ensuring a comfortable operating posture for the user.
The six-point 'shadow free' fibre optic ringlight provides bright, uniform illumination of the component.
In addition to the biodisk inspections, I-SYS Automation also use the Lynx for inspection of their tooling and pre-production samples.
In these applications, it is important to use a microscope which allows for fatigue free inspection.
