"The whole metrology field is becoming more international and the split between traditional centres of excellence: North America, Europe and Japan, MD, and the rest of the world, no longer apply.
These days we are just as likely to find that our customers in India and China have the same demands for high quality and precision, as their European counterparts.
At the same time, production-related metrology is increasingly passing out of the hands of specialist metrologists and is now being undertaken by line-production engineers, many of whom have only a passing knowledge of the science of measurement.
These two major changes are having a profound impact on the development of metrology solutions as equipment and processes are increasingly being designed to deal with very specific manufacturing requirements, while being operated by non-specialist staff.
These technical challenges, combined with enormous downward pressure on prices, are creating a tough market for metrology suppliers, in which, like their customers, only the strongest and smartest will survive.
Encouragingly, the UK and Irish markets have succeeded in becoming very specialist, with many good, high-tech companies manufacturing in low volume over here and undertaking large scale production overseas.
This leads to extenuated supply chains which suppliers such as metrology companies need to be able to service transparently around the world. Request a free brochure from Vision Engineering ...
The challenge which therefore faces all of us in the future is how to provide our customers not only with a range of products to satisfy their needs but to provide the technical and marketing infrastructure that transforms those products into solutions - wherever in the world they are being used.".
