In a series of recent turning tests on grey cast iron and SG pearlitic cast iron, Tiger.tec tool inserts from Walter GB of Redditch consistently out-performed competitor alternatives by, for example, doubling tool life/number of workpieces produced and achieving increased cutting data and therefore reduced cycle times Designed specifically for machining cast iron, the Tiger.tec (Registered) inserts combine a mixture of aluminium oxide and titanium nitride coatings on a tungsten carbide substrate to offer unrivalled cutting performance

In one test, taking a 6mm roughing turn cut in 200mm diameter SG pearlitic cast iron rolls, Tiger.tec was applied at higher cutting speeds, revolutions and feed rates than a competitor insert - 130m/min, 207 rev/min and 62mm/min, respectively, compared with 30m/min, 48 rev/min and 14mm/min - and successfully produced a similar number of workpieces with only slight insert edge chipping compared with badly chipped edge wear on the alternative insert.

In another test, taking 3mm deep cuts on a 153mm diameter grey cast iron face plate, Tiger.tec was applied at similar cutting data as a competitor's carbide grade (cutting speeds of 200mm/min and feed rates of 83mm/min) but was applied dry rather than with water/oil coolant.

Tiger.tec produced 83 cuts compared with 40 before any visible flank wear.

Tiger.tec is available in a range of styles and sizes, and features two different coatings on a carbide base.

The black, aluminium oxide coating is particularly effective against tribochemical wear and permits higher cutting speeds and feeds to be employed while also providing longer service life.

The gold coating applied to the inserts' flank surfaces simplifies visual wear detection and thus avoids the unnecessary waste of unused cutting edges, premature insert indexing or excessive flank wear.
