Toolmaker's investment in its sixth CNC multi-axis tool grinder, coupled with its use of an NC tool inspection machine, ensures that the company maintains high standards on cutter grinding.

Marlor Tooling's investment in its sixth Walter CNC Helitronic multi-axis tool grinder, coupled with its use of a Walter Helicheck NC4 tool inspection machine, means the Peterborough-based company has the largest collection of Walter machines in the UK for specialist tool regrinding The installation last year of a Helitronic Power Regrinder complemented two other Power Regrinders and the company's Helitronic CNC 45, Helitronic Classic Power and Helitronic Minipower tool regrinders installed progressively since 1994

These offer high-accuracy, cost-effective five-axis regrinding of a multitude of tools up to 370mm long and 320mm diameter, including cylindrical cutters, tapered cutters, drills, face milling cutters, woodworking tools, profile tools, taps, reamers and thread mills.

They complement the Helicheck NC4 inspection machine which optically gauges the accuracy of all critical tool features and boasts repeat accuracy on diameter measurements of +0.002mm and +0.003mm on length, performing all routines in accordance with DIN ISO EN 9000.

The Helitronic Power Regrinder has traverses in the X, Y and Z axes of 500mm by 320mm by 660mm, and features +/- 200 deg of swivel in the C axis.

In order to generate 0 to 9,500 revs/min, 19Nm of constant torque is produced by an 11.5kW spindle drive.

Traverse rates are 15m/min in linear axes and 120 deg/sec in rotational axes.

Marlor's latest Power Regrinder is fitted with a Disc Loader that accommodates up to 40 tools, and is designed for automated and lights-out machining.

Mounted directly onto the machine, all loading and movement is controlled by the machine's CNC.

Kevin Taylor, Marlor Tooling's managing director, says it is his "innate fear of letting customers down" that is one of the main reasons why he continually invests in CNC tool regrinders from Walter GB of Redditch - machines he describes as "the world's best".
