Saw blade grinders now have an optional CBN grinding wheel on a second spindle for single set-up saw tooth back face grinding and a side grinding option for replacement teeth.

Walter Maschinenbau has announced a series of developments that improve the productivity of its Woodtronic CNC 5D and CNC 6F saw blade grinding machines, specifically: an optional CBN grinding wheel on the CNC 5D's second spindle for single set-up saw tooth back face grinding; a side grinding option for replacement teeth, also in the same set-up on the CNC 5D; and an enhancement to the three-pallet loader used on both the CNC 5D and CNC 6F models Both the Woodtronic CNC 5D and 6F can accommodate saw blades from 80 mm to 850mm diameter and having tooth pitches of 6mm to 125mm

Processing times can be significantly reduced by performing back face grinding in the same set-up as front and side face grinding routines on the Woodtronic CNC 5D by utilising a CBN wheel in the machine's second spindle.

Particularly in the case of saw blades with large tooth pitches and, by definition, long tooth backs, back face grinding is traditionally time-consuming and often performed as a second operation because of the necessity to reduce the feed rate of the carbide teeth onto the diamond wheel, if quality levels are to be maintained.

However, by adding a CBN wheel to the machine's second spindle, back faces can now be processed in the same set-up at optimum feed rates.

Single set-up tooth side grinding is another new option on the Woodtronic CNC 5D, again designed to eliminate a separate set-up, often on a separate machine, for when new replacement teeth have been added to a blade.

By developing innovative functionality based around the operation of the machine's axis system, the CNC 5D is now able to detect the newly brazed teeth and perform the task automatically.

In addition, both the Woodtronic CNC 5D and CNC 6F machines can now automatically accommodate random saw blades of differing bore hole diameters (adapter rings) and, via a newly-designed automatically adjusting gripper, eliminate the time-consuming and awkward manual adjustment previously needed.
