A range of milling inserts, cutters and solid carbide drills is designed to make machining times for steel workpieces can now be up to twice as fast or reduce power consumption.

Machining times on steel workpieces can now be up to twice as fast with the Xtra.tec tool programme being displayed at MACH 2006 by Walter GB of Redditch Embracing milling inserts, cutters and solid carbide drills, Xtra.tec's claims for improved productivity - including, for example, reduced cost per cutting edge through maximum cutting performance at low power consumption - are based on Walter's development of the cutting materials, WKP25 and WKP35

In action, both are characterised by reduced formation of comb cracks, and are therefore ideally suited to wet machining.

Xtra.tec inserts combine a mixture of aluminium oxide and titanium nitride coatings on a tungsten carbide substrate to offer unrivalled cutting performance on all steels.

The inserts' black, aluminium oxide coating is particularly effective against tribochemical wear and permits higher cutting speeds and feeds to be employed while also providing longer service life.

The golden coating applied to the clearance surfaces simplifies wear detection and thus avoids the unnecessary waste of unused cutting edges.

In terms of drilling, the Xtra.tec inserts with positive geometries are harmonised with galvanised nickel drill bodies having exchangeable two-point bits and spiral flutes under the designation B401x.

The drill can perform at double the usual feed rates and has two effective cutting inserts with excellent repeatable and rotational accuracy, as well as extremely close bore tolerances.

Inserts can be easily and quickly exchanged via a single clamping screw.

B401x drills are available as standard in diameters of 12mm to 31mm, and standard lengths of three, five and seven times diameter.

Shoulder milling cutters are also available with Xtra.tec inserts.

Available in diameters of 40mm to 160mm for cutting depths up to 15mm, the F4041 cutter, for example, features rhombic inserts with four positive cutting edges each having an approach angle of 90 deg.

Such an extreme spiral means step generation is avoided on machined side walls, while the resulting 'soft' cutting action promotes high feed rates and low power consumption.

Milling cutter F4042 features rhombic double-edged inserts of high positive geometry to again promote maximum cutting performance at low power consumption.

Three types of insert with cutting lengths of 8mm, 12mm and 16mm are recommended for these cutters available in diameters from 10mm to 160mm.

Also available is the F4033 face milling cutter with double-sided, highly positive cutting angles Xtra.tec inserts having eight effective cutting edges.

Of neutral shape, the inserts fit either right- or left-hand cutters in the diameter range 40mm to 160mm.
