A high-speed milling cutter fitted with trigon inserts can be supplied with PVD Tiger.tec inserts grades for milling stainless steel, titanium and nickel-based alloys.

Walter GB of Bromsgrove, UK, advise that its EF2330 high-speed milling cutter, equipped with trigon inserts, can now be supplied with PVD Tiger.tec inserts grades WSP45 and WSM35 These grades are for the machining of stainless steel and difficult-to-machine titanium and nickel-based alloys

Walter said that the developments complement the cutter's existing availability in Tiger.tec WKP25 and WKP35 and its ability to operate at five times the speed of recognised feed rates.

Designed specifically for, for example, face milling, interpolation from solid, ramping and insert plunging, the F2330 cutter features three-edged, positive inserts.

These guarantee a soft, low-vibration cut and three cutting edge geometries are available for universal, stable and easy-cutting applications.

The 20mm to 85mm tool bodies have wide integral chip gulleys for optimal swarf evacuation.

Walter told manufacturingtalk.com that this is a great advantage on a cutter that is capable of operating at such feed rates.

Tiger.tec inserts regularly achieve up to 75% more components per edge than competitor products, and in some cases double output, due to their improved process reliability courtesy of a high resistance to flank wear, cratering and thermal cracking.

The inserts combine a mixture of aluminium oxide (Al2O3), titanium carbon nitride (TiCN) and titanium nitride (TiN) coatings on a tungsten carbide substrate, featuring a grey (TiCN) rake face and a golden, TiN finish (flank face) that aids wear identification.

The aluminium oxide coating is particularly effective against tribochemical wear, said Walter, and permits higher cutting speeds and feeds to be employed while also providing longer service life.

The golden TiN coating applied to the inserts' clearance surfaces simplifies wear detection and thus avoids the unnecessary waste of unused cutting edges.

The grey TiCN rake face minimises negative tensile stress and improves adhesion and toughness.
