Developing a range of turning inserts to meet every steel turning job from roughing through to finishing, Walter GB has added on inserts for finishing and rough/medium turning.

Walter GB of Bromsgrove, UK, has extended its Tiger.tec Steel turning insert family to meet every turning requirement on steel workpieces from roughing through to fine finishing Highly productive finishing is the function of grade WPP01, which features particularly sharp cutting edges

There is also the WPP05 ifor roughing/medium machining.

Both inserts offer top cutting speeds and stock removal rates, said Walter.

WPP05 and its associated cutting geometries is especially designed for near-net machining with allowances of just 1 to 4mm.

Tiger.tec inserts regularly achieve up to 75% more components per edge than competitor products.

In some cases, said Walter GB to manufacturingtalk.com, they double output, due to their improved process reliability.

The inserts exhibit high resistance to flank wear, cratering and thermal cracking.

The inserts cleverly combine a mixture of aluminium oxide (Al2O3), titanium carbon nitride (TiCN) and titanium nitride (TiN) coatings on a tungsten carbide substrate, featuring a grey (TiCN) rake face and a golden, TiN finish (flank face) that aids wear identification.

Walter GB said that the aluminium oxide coating is particularly effective against tribochemical wear and permits higher cutting speeds and feeds to be employed while also providing longer service life.

The golden TiN coating applied to the inserts' clearance surfaces simplifies wear detection and thus avoids the unnecessary waste of unused cutting edges.

The grey TiCN rake face minimises negative tensile stress and improves adhesion and toughness.
