What is claimed to be the world's first PVD aluminium oxide coated carbide that offers up to 75% more components per edge, versus competing inserts, is now available for turning.

Walter's innovative Tiger.tec indexable inserts are now available for turning as well as milling Tiger.tec - the world's first PVD (physical vapour deposition) aluminium oxide coated carbide - can achieve up to 75% more components per edge than competitor products, said Walter GB

The company said that in some cases the coated inserts double output, due to their improved process reliability arising from their high resistance to flank wear, cratering and thermal cracking.

Designated Tiger.tec WSM30, the turning insert range embraces all standard ISO shapes in positive and negative geometries, and is intended in particular at high-alloy and stainless steel machining tasks as well as titanium alloys and 'super alloys' such as Inconel.

The benefits of Tiger.tec have also been applied to the expanded range of Xtra.tec milling cutters, with a host of new tools: a trio of side and face milling cutters; three shoulder milling cutters; and a new octagon cutter.

All feature four-edged Tiger.tec indexable inserts in staggered tooth formation and approach angles of 90 deg, while a variety of insert geometries is available to cover all relevant applications.

* Solid carbide drilling - an innovative double-coating (Double Performance Line - DPL) promises to double drill life on steel and cast iron applications.

Comprising a basic coating to protect the tool and to optimise the adhesion of the special tip coating, the innovative DPL technology enables the tool to operate at greater cutting speeds than usual, said Walter, while offering extended tool life at conventional cutting parameters.

The micro grain K30F solid carbide drill is available in diameters from 3mm to 20mm and is capable of drilling up to five times diameter.

* Tapping titanium alloys - also on show at MACH 2008 will be the Prototyp range of taps including the Paradur Ti Plus and Prototex Tini Plus models for high-productivity, high-quality machining of titanium alloys.

The HSS taps feature AlCrN coating for tapping high-strength titanium alloys, as used in the aerospace sector, which have a tendency to jam.

The Paradur Ti Plus and Prototex Tini Plus offer high process security in these materials due to considerable clearance for reduced friction, which gives outstanding tool life as well as excellent quality threads.

Ranges are available in UNJF styles 10-32 up to 3/8-24.

The Prototyp tapping range also includes the new Paradur Short Chip available in metric and metric fine threads from M5 up to M20, for blind hole threads up to 3.5 times diameter in long chipping materials.

This tap eliminates any 'bird nesting problems' due to its novel chip breaker geometry coupled with axial through coolant.

Also available is the TiCN-coated Prototex solid carbide tap for HSC applications.

This is available in metric and metric fine sizes.
