Machining centres and CNC millers
introduced
Among 10 machining centres, CNC lathes and a VTL making their debut at MACH 2004, the machining centres and CNC milling/boring machines all feature higher performance and latest CNCs.
With a total of 10 machines being displayed - including three new models from Kia (the 1 m plus capacity VX500 vertical machining centre), Toshulin (the cost-competitive SKL12 vertical boring and turning machine) and Soraluce (the high-performance SP-8000 travelling column, fixed-bed mill, which is also likely to be the biggest machine at the show), Ward CNC's 500m2 display in Hall 4, the largest stand at MACH, will certainly emphasise that both 'big and small machines are beautiful' In addition, a Ward CNC-loaned Kia V40 vertical machining centre will be demonstrating laser toolsetting and workpiece touch probing on the Marposs stand in Hall 5

Soraluce machines add another dimension to milling
Soraluce machines add another dimension to heavy-duty milling applications.
With a variety of the machines either under power or cutting metal, the Ward CNC display will also include representatives of the company's Union (boring and milling) and Hankook (turning) ranges, so clearly the Sheffield-based machine tool specialist will be presenting something for everyone at the NEC.
Among the 11 machines on show, the machining centres and CNC miller-borers include: * Soraluce TA20 bed mill and the SP-8000.
* Union five-axis (live spindle) TC110 table-type horizontal boring and milling machine.

Ward CNC to distribute Union machine tools
Ward CNC of Sheffield has been appointed exclusive UK distributor for the Union range of CNC horizontal live spindle machining centres manufactured by Union Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH of Chemnitz, Germany
* Kia KH63 horizontal machining centre; the VX500 VMC; and three turning centres - SKT21LMSB with driven tools and sub-spindle, SKT15LM universal with driven tools, and the SKT300 heavy-duty with geared head and solid slideways.
The trio of new machines making their public debuts at MACH will be dominated by the 8000mm by 1350mm table size Soraluce SP-8000 travelling-column fixed-bed milling machine, which now boasts higher cutting speeds and higher rapid traverses than its predecessors - rapids of 25m/min and high-speed electro-spindles rated at 18,000 to 30,000 revs/min.
In addition, as standard the machine features an automatic indexing head powered by a 30kW, 4,000 revs/min motor.
The SP-8000 is described as one of the most versatile milling machines available, being designed for one-hit machining from heavy-duty cutting through to finish machining.
It has X, Y and Z axes of 6500mm by 2000mm by 1200mm and, combined with a 1000mm by 1000mm rotary table, the head has two indexing planes - one vertical to the spindle, the other at 45deg - utilising a 60-position toolchanger, the machine is able to complete even the most complex parts in a single setting.
Also representing Soraluce will be the TA20 travelling table-type bed-type mill.
With X, Y and Z axes of 2000mm by 800mm by 800mm and rapids of 20m/min, the machine has a working area of 2000mm by 800mm and a 22kW/3,000 revs/min manual indexing head with through-the-spindle coolant.
A 20-tool ATC is standard.
This model will particularly appeal to sub-contractors and relatively small mould and die work.
Headlined as 'high speed and highly productive', the new Kia VX500 vertical machining centre has a spindle speed of 10,000 revs/min, and X, Y and Z axes capacities of 1060mm by 510mm by 635mm along with rapids of 36m/min in X and Y, and 30m/min in Z.
With a 1200mm by 500mm table capable of accommodating 1,000kg and a 20-station ATC, the VX500 promotes both high precision and high rigidity with power, offering users a cost-to-performance ratio that is unrivalled in a machine of this class.
Ward CNC will also be displaying four other Kia models, including the 'best selling' Kia KH63G horizontal machining centre.
Capable of handling components weighing 1000kg, this machine features twin 630mm by 630mm pallets and X, Y and Z axes capacities of 950mm by 820mm by 750mm.
With one-piece bed and rugged eight-surface slideway system coupled with a 22kW two-speed geared spindle that produces 8,000 revs/min, as well as rapid travels of 20m/min and a feed rate of 1 to 5000mm/min, the machine's popularity is due to its reputation for cost-effective yet highly rigid and accurate machining.
Also on show will be the Union TC110 table-type horizontal boring and milling machine which has X, Y and Z axes travels of 2000mm, 1600mm and 1500mm and a rapid traverse rate of 15,000 mm/min, while W axis (spindle stroke) is 550 mm and the B axis (rotary table) can be indexed in 360,000 positions.
Powered by a 22kW main motor, the machine features infinitely variable speeds of 5 to 4,000 revs/min and a torque of 2,000Nm.
Feed rates for X, Y, Z and W axes are to 15000mm/min, while table rotation is 3 revs/min.
The 1245mm by 1500mm table can accommodate 6,000kg, and the machine has optional compact coolant unit, 16 bar through-spindle coolant and 40-tool ATC.
Finally, the Kia V40 Hi-Centre double-column vertical machining centre on the Marposs stand is a 560mm by 450mm by 450mm X, Y, Z axis capacity machine, with 30-station ATC and up to 12,000 revs/min spindle speed.
The machine will be featuring the Mida Laser 75 laser toolsetter, and the E83 TXL110 spindle-mounted touch probe for part checking.
Marposs Mida Laser 105 laser toolsetting and an E86 radio transmission spindle probe will also be evident on the Ward CNC stand.
