Builder of deep-hole drilling machine tools and systems has aded on a vertical machining centre on the basis of its rigidity, tooling features and economical pricing.

As part of its strategic plant update programme, Mollart Engineering has invested in a Hartford Mercury VMC-1600 vertical machining centre from Ward CNC of Sheffield because, said managing director, Guy Mollart, "The machine offers everything we need in terms of technical specification, capacity and capability, and at a cost-effective price." With a core expertise established over 75 years ago in the manufacture of deep hole drilling machines and tooling systems, as well as ongoing highly accurate, price-competitive sub-contract machining and turnkey electro-mechanical assembly projects, Mollart Engineering includes blue chip clients in the aerospace, automotive, defence, oil, mould and die, nuclear and telecommunications sectors among its extensive customer base Indeed, continued Mollart, the company maintains its global reputation not only through a highly-skilled workforce but also by utilising a comprehensive portfolio of high-technology machine tools - that are updated on a regular basis to guarantee the application of best-practice production technology - at its site in Neath in addition to its headquarters in Chessington, Surrey, UK

The investment in the Hartford vertical machining centre is the latest example of this and, added Mollart, the machine was chosen above competitor products: "Because, for example, it offered more tools than comparable products, through-spindle coolant - which is important to us - and was available at a good price.

It is also of heavy-duty cast iron construction with four-shear hardened and ground box slideways to guarantee the appropriate levels of rigidity and accuracy." With X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 1600mm by 800mm by 660mm as standard, the BT-50 taper Hartford Mercury VMC-1600 is a heavy-duty, open fronted machine that offers spindle speeds of 40-4,000 rev/min/50-6,000 rev/min (geared/pulley head, respectively) from its 15/20kW main spindle motor.

It features 20-bar through-spindle coolant, rigid tapping capability and the Hartrol-Fanuc AI100 (0iMC) CNC.

Mollart Engineering has also ordered a fourth axis indexing table to enable it to handle complex machining routines on large, two metre long parts on the machine.
