Nine latest CNC machine tools to be shown

A TW Ward CNC Machinery product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Feb 14, 2008

Among nine machine tools to be shown by Ward CNC at MACH 2008 will be three models of vertical machining centre and a double column machining centre.

Ward CNC of Sheffield, UK will be showing at least nine machine tools on an extensive 400m2 stand at the UK's MACH 2008 machine tool exhibition.

These will be a sample from some of the world's leading brands.

The nine machines are from Hankook, Hartford, Soraluce and Takisawa Taiwan.

* Vertical machining centres (VMC) - there will be three Hartford VMCs: the Power Centre Pro-1000 and 2150 models alongside the Tornado HCMC.

The Pro-1000 has a table of 1150mm by 600mm for loads of 700kg, and X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 1000 mm by 600mm by 510/630mm.

Spindle speeds from the 7.5kW (optionally 10kW) motor are 40-8,000 rev/min (pulley version) or 40-6,000 rev/min (geared) and automatic tool changer (ATC) magazine capacity is 20/24 tools.

The double column Pro-2150 has X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 2060mm by 1560mm by 780mm, and a table size of 2100mm by 1450mm with a distance between the columns of 1680mm.

The two-speed geared headstock provides 6,000 rev/min and 26kW spindle motor power.

This high-quality machine is representative of the extensive range of specifications and capacities available within the Hartford range of double column machines.

Available in two capacities, the Hartford Tornado HCMC is a heavy-duty vertical machining centre that has a table of 1650mm by 820mm/2,000mm by 920mm to accommodate 2,200/3,000kg loads, and travels in X-, Y- and Z-axis of 1500mm by 820mm by 700mm/1800mm by 920mm by 700mm (optionally 800mm).

The standard 15kW spindle motor produces 10,000 revs/min (direct drive) and tool capacity is 20/32.

* User-friendly CNCs - an important feature of the machines' Fanuc/Hartrol CNC systems is the user-friendly Hartrol advanced functionality programming routines that are available as standard, said Ward CNC to manufacturingtalk.com.

These routines include a series of easy-to-use cycles, designed to simplify and speed up programming times and therefore reduce downtime along with other useful setting and maintenance functions for ease of operator use.

For example, the routines cover the following.

* Workpiece datum setting using edge setter.

* Manual tool setting using calibrated setting block.

* Tool magazine tracking (for arm-type ATC).

* Tool logging.

* Spindle load monitor.

* Full M Code listings.

* Comprehensive set of special canned cycles.

A Hankook 9NC two-axis lathe with 4000mm between centres will be on show.

The machine has a double-walled and ribbed one-piece Meehanite cast iron bed with induction hardened and ground precision slideways for maximum stability and accuracy.

The twin chuck 9NC machine also features a large spindle bore (up to 254mm), a 950mm swing over bed, 630mm over carriage and 4000mm between centres (options up to 8000 mm available).

The machine is also equipped with a specialised boring saddle and boring equipment for through-bore applications.

* Travelling table milling centre - the Soraluce CNC milling machine range will be represented by the new TA-35A travelling table milling centre.

This high-end specification machine is equipped with a fully programmable 2.5 deg by 2.5 deg auto-indexing milling head of novel design.

The head offers high accuracy and performance with through-spindle coolant facility and auto tool clamping without the need for external pipe work.

The machine has a table size of 3700mm by 1000mm and travels of 3500mm by 1250mm by 1000mm with rapid traverse rates of 25m/min, a 20-station tool magazine and ATC and Heidenhain iTNC 530 CNC.

* Twin-spindle turning centre with Y-axis - illustrating Ward CNC's 'Japanese quality at Taiwanese prices', Takisawa Taiwan turning range will include the EX-310 and EX-110, the new EX-322 and the EX-910 twin-spindle, Y-axis machine.

The 15/22kW three-axis EX-310 slant bed lathe has a 495mm swing over the bed, 845mm between centres and a maximum turning diameter and length of 350mm and 710mm, respectively.

The machine will handle bar of 75/77mm diameter and has a 12-station driven tool turret that operates at 40-4,000 rev/min.

Capable of handling 75mm bar, the Takisawa Taiwan EX-110 2-axis slant bed lathe features a 495mm swing over the bed, 400mm over the crosslide and 845mm between centres.

Standard turning diameter is 287mm and maximum turning diameters and lengths are 400mm and 710mm, respectively from this 50-3,500 rev/min spindle speed machine.

* Takisawa Taiwan's all new EX-322 turning centre - a 3-axis version of the highly successful EX-122/H - has a C-axis and driven tools.

Its outline specification includes a swing over the bed of 750mm, over the crosslide of 560mm and a distance between centres of 1820mm.

Standard turning diameter is 450mm, and maximum turning diameter is 610mm and maximum turning length is 1530mm.

Capable of handling 184mm diameter bar and with a 12-station turret, the EX-322 has a spindle speed of 12-1,200 rev/min from the 30/37kW main spindle motor, coupled with traverse rates in X- and Z-axis of 18 and 22m/min, respectively.

With C- and Y-axis and using 12 driven tools, the Taiwan Takisawa EX-910 twin-spindle CNC slant bed lathe has X-, Y-, Z-axis travels of 245mm, 160mm and 710mm, as well as 710mm travel in the B-axis (right-hand spindle).

The machine features bar capacities of 75mm and 52mm (left- and right-hand spindles, respectively) to complement a maximum turning diameter and length capabilities of 340mm and 660mm.

Swing over the bed is 680mm, chuck size is 255mm on both spindles, and spindle speeds are up to 3,500 rev/min from the 22/18.5kW motors on both spindles.

Driven tool speed is 4,000 rev/min from a 5.5kW motor.

Rapid traverse rates are quoted as 24m/min.

Ward CNC is also exclusive UK agent for Union boring and milling machines and Toshulin vertical turning lathes, and details of these will also be available on the stand.
