Shot blast machine relocation doubles output
Billington Structures will double output at its factory after employing Wheelabrator Group to relocate a shot blast machine that was originally installed twenty years ago.
It will also lead to cost savings as it can handle large and fragile castings, previously sent to a subcontractor.
Shot blasting - propelling small spherical media at high speeds under controlled conditions - is an essential part of Archibald Young's production process, removing sand from castings and creating a superior finish ready for customers.
Ian Young, managing director at Archibald Young, said: "This new machine replaces our old rotary barrel tumble shot blast machine, which had been in operation for more than 30 years.

A vertical blast machine is designed to occupy limited space and can treat steel sheets from 0.5m to 5m wide, blasting both sides of the workpiece simultaneously.
Wheel shot blast plant completes over 27,000h
A 13-year-old wheel shot blast machine has completed more than 27,000 'blast hours' and is still proving its worth at a customer's steel plant said the manufacturer.
"While still working fine, we found that as our business grew and the range of castings expanded, the machine was not appropriate for many products, causing damage to the edges of some shapes and leading us to increase our reliance on subcontractors.
"This new machine will allow us to blast all of our castings, irrespective of size or material - it's safe to use on bronze, iron, copper-based and aluminium alloys - and raise our quality to a higher specification." A table type machine is ideal for cleaning a mixture of castings, even the most delicate as there is no tumbling action likely to cause damage.
Established in 1959, Archibald Young is one of Scotland's leading foundries employing 30 people in Kirkintilloch and a further 17 its facility in Motherwell, opened in 2001.
It also owns Premier Castings in Oldham, near Manchester.
The foundry is renowned for its range of quality castings and complete value-added approach, including a custom-built pattern store housing over 10,000 customer designs.
Skilled pattern makers combine traditional skills with modern technology to produce equipment in wood, metal or resin.
The firm manufactures castings for the marine, civil and general engineering, ship building, mining and pump and valve industries.
Mr Young said: "We pride ourselves on the quality of our castings and our continual investment in new technology.
As part of this, we recognised the benefits of upgrading our equipment to suit our evolving needs.
