Hybrid combines sliding and fixed head
strategies
A hybrid CNC automatic combines the best design elements from fixed head and sliding head lathes to maximise flexibility and productivity.
The robust new XL32 machine introduced by the specialist French manufacturer, Manurhin, made a big impression at the recent MACH2002 exhibition Visitors were intrigued by the unique design of the machine - a hybrid combining the best design elements from both fixed head and sliding head lathes which maximises flexibility and productivity whilst minimising the traditional problems associated with sliding head machines

Chuckers also aimed at small and medium batches
Vertical turning lathes are designed to meet European customers' needs for cost-effective chuck machining, particularly for small-and medium-sized series as well as volume production.
Two bridge-type M-Cs aimed at mould and die sector
Two vertical-spindle, bridge-type machining centres are aimed at the mould / die sector as well as at companies producing small to large batches of parts ranging from simple to complex.
Existing sliding head users in particular were impressed by the 5.5 tonne cast iron bed which provides the necessary rigidity to enable heavy machining on bar up to 32mm diameter and the slant bed design enables effective swarf evacuation and also provides easy access to tooling - allowing quick set-up and reducing change over times between jobs.
The powerful 12kW spindle motor, delivering 12,000rpm, combined with a bar capacity from 13 to 32mm and a stroke of 350mm (which may be extended through "repeat" programming) provides maximum flexibility.
A cutting trial using 30mm mild steel featuring simultaneous drilling on both spindles at differential speeds and feeds, milling on the Y-Axis and the fourth turret (mounted above the sub-spindle) performing additional rear operations on the workpiece demonstrated the productivity of the machine.

Fast and rapid linear and rotary motions win out
High productivity, derived from fast rapid motions in the linear and rotary axes, is claimed to set these HMCs apart from competitors, said the supplier.
Tapping centres upgrade to 4/5-axis VMC status
Moving-column drill-tapping machine, having 30 taper tooling, a more powerful spindle motor and a chain-type tool magazine, is now more accurately described as a VMC.
Visitors were also impressed by the user-friendly K'MX programming system which automatically maximises the amount of work that can be carried-out simultaneously - minimising dwells to achieve the shortest possible cycle times.
Manuhrin's modular design allows customers to select a machine to meet their own specific production.requirements, featuring up to 12 axes, including: * 2 turrets of 8 tools can be installed on both sides of the guide-bush, or the rear turret can be replaced with a 6 tool rack system with a Y-axis.
* In the middle a cross slide turret allows end-working to main and sub spindles simultaneously.
* A fourth turret can be mounted above the sub-spindle for additional rear operations on the workpiece.
Five of the machines have already been delivered to Visteon's plant in Germany to manufacture complex shaft components.
Underlining Manurhin1s vision of building machines to reduce CPU, the machines are running 24hours per day, seven days a week.
Visteon are so impressed with their productivity and reliability in fact that they have recently confirmed their intention to order further machines - the first XL32 machine in the UK, delivered for the MACH exhibition, can now be seen in action at the Kenilworth showroom of Manurhin's newly appointed UK distributor, Whitehouse Machine Tools.
