OKK's HM-X6000 available in UK

A Whitehouse Machine Tools product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Oct 20, 2008

A horizontal-spindle machining centre capable of fully interpolative five-axis machining of prismatic components has been introduced to the UK by Whitehouse Machine Tools.

Manufactured by OKK, the HM-X6000 is a twin pallet change machine that accommodates components up to 750mm diameter by 700mm high and weighing a maximum of 650kg.

OKK chose a tilting trunnion/rotary table design rather than incorporating the rotary axes in the spindle head.

The HM-X6000 uses double-disc clamping of the hydraulically counterbalanced, -110 / +20 degree swivelling trunnion (A-axis), generating a holding force of 10,000N.

Both mechanical and hydraulic methods are used and the clamping pressure is maintained even if the power supply is interrupted.

Rapid traverse of 54m/min and 10m/min cutting feed rate in all three linear axes minimise machine idle time.

So too does the two-second exchange of a BT50 tool from the 40-station magazine (optionally up to 236 stations) to the 12,000 rev/min, 30 kW, Big Plus face-and-taper-contact spindle.

A spindle bearing bore diameter of 100 mm indicates the robustness of machine build, as does the 20-tonnes installed weight.

Slideways are supported on high load, cross roller guides mounted onto the heavily ribbed, one-piece bed.

All castings are produced in OKK's foundry for consistency of quality.

Steeply inclined slideway covers discourage swarf from accumulating in the working area and two coil-type chip conveyors, one either side of the table, efficiently remove the chips from the machine.

Core chilled ballscrews and the manufacturer's proprietary Soft Scale II software in the Fanuc F310is-A5 control are employed for dynamic thermal stability.
