Low-cost system detects packaging leaks
quickly
A low cost, leak detection system that will detect leaks in individual packages without the need for trace gases offers test times of around 30s and requires no special skills.
Witt Gas Techniques, the Warrington, Cheshire, UK-based gas safety, control, mixing and analysis equipment supplier has launched 'Pack-Vac' a new, low cost, leak detection system that will detect leaks in individual packages without the need for trace gases This new system uses only water and compressed air to detect any leaks

Leak detection system with vacuum attachment
A low cost, leak detection system that detects leaks in individual packages without the need for trace gases, can now be supplied with a special attachment to test vacuum packs for leaks.
Pack-Vac leak detection system improved
The 'PACK-VAC' low cost, leak detection system is now fitted with a new flexible seal to provide improved sealing properties when drawing a vacuum
It has been designed for use with most flexible and rigid packaging found in the food production and pharmaceutical industries as well as other industrial packaging.
It is very portable and is available with 6 different size chambers ranging from height 203mm x width 280mm x depth 203mm to height 508mm x width 813mm x depth 660mm.
It is very easy to use - the package is placed in the chamber filled with water and compressed air is applied at between 5 - 8 bar.
The immersed package inflates and any leak is detected by a stream of bubbles The benefits of using 'Pack-Vac' include test times of around 30 seconds, no calibration of the equipment is required, no special skills required to use the equipment, it is simple to maintain and has an easy to clean Perspex housing, no electrical connections are required nor is there a need for a vacuum pump.
Purpose built versions of 'Pack-Vac' to suit individual requirements can be built to order and a range of accessories is also available.
'Pack-Vac' is an economic 'beginners' alternative to the Company's more advanced 'Leak-Master', a micro-leak detection system for finding leaks based on CO2 detection technology.
It too is portable and only takes a couple of seconds to detect a leak, the test is non-destructive with the package being returned to the production line.
With 'Leak-Master' administration and analysis of data is very simple through integration with quality management systems used in pharmaceutical and food production.
Leak-Master can be interfaced to a PC or PDA via Ethernet or Wireless LAN, eliminating the need for manual data recording.
