Finnish-owned Wipak (UK) is to invest nearly GBP 6 million in its mid-Wales packaging facility, substantially increasing the size of the production area and 38 new jobs The company, which manufactures printed film packaging primarily for the perishable fresh food sector, plans to build a 1,566 square metre (16,855 square foot) extension to its existing factory at the Buttington Cross Enterprise Park in Welshpool, Powys, to house a modern printing press and ancillary converting equipment

The company moved its packaging facility to bespoke premises in Welshpool in 1997 and it has undergone continued expansion.

The latest expansion has been supported by the Welsh Development Agency.

Phillip Wolstenholme, the managing director of Wipak (UK), said: "This is a significant investment by our board in to the existing facility here in mid-Wales and highlights the company's commitment to the area and our workforce.

The latest expansion will enable us to increase production of packaging film from around 25 million square metres to 45 million square metres a year." Welcoming the latest investment, Andrew Davies, the Minister for Economic Development and Transport, said: "This significant investment is a further boost for mid-Wales and is a clear indication of the company's commitment to the area and the quality of the mid-Wales workforce." Dr Geraint Davies, the Welsh Development Agency executive director for mid-Wales, added: "Wipak (UK) has continuously placed its confidence in mid-Wales through continued investment.

This latest and most significant investment is testimony to the loyalty of the company's workforce and wider community." Currently employing 52 people, Wipak (UK) is a wholly owned subsidiary of privately-owned Finnish group, Wihuri Oy, based in Helsinki and is part of the packaging arm of the group that has facilities throughout Europe and North America.
