Drills produce 30x diameter deep holes

By introducing a 30x diameter drill range a company has eliminated the need for dedicated deep-hole drilling machine tools and the need for using specialist sub-contractors.

To drill holes to depths of between 20x and 30x diameter normally would require gun drills and specialist deep hole drilling companies The introduction of WNT (UK)'s range of solid carbide drills has changed the process

Available up to 30x diameter in sizes ranging from 3mm to 12mm, the WTX range of drills can be used on any conventional CNC machine tool equipped with through tool coolant that can run at standard carbide drill feeds and speeds.

A typical example is drilling a 6mm diameter hole to a depth of 180mm in a 42CrMo4 steel.

The cutting data used is 70m/min at a feedrate of 0.1mm/rev.

The only concession to the increased drill length is the requirement for a pilot hole of the same diameter to be produced to a depth of 3x diameter.

A complimentary range of pilot drills to suit is included in the WTX range in WNT's catalogue.

The drills are designed to operate without the need for a 'pecking' cycle, which is a major benefit in helping to reduce overall drilling cycle times.

Also helping the smooth operation of the WTX drill is the combination of a four-facet drill point, special cutting edge geometry, 30 deg helix angle, TiAlN coating on the front section of the drill (where it is most needed) and a highly polished finish within the drill flutes that is instrumental in good swarf evacuation.

"With the introduction of the WTX 30 x diameter drill range we have eliminated the requirement for dedicated machine tools or the need to sub-contract this type of work out to specialist deep hole drilling companies," said Adrian Fitts, WNT (UK) Business Development manager.

"The ability to use a solid carbide drill running at existing speeds and feeds has simplified what was seen as a 'black art' to many engineering companies.

At the same time it is helping to reduce the cost per hole and ultimately to improve productivity and profitability." To keep delivery times to a minimum WTX drills are stocked in 0.5mm increments up to 8.5mm diameter.

All other sizes can be produced quickly, to order, from an extensive range of blanks that are always held in stock, allowing any diameter of drill to be specified. Request a free brochure from WNT (UK) ...
