Synchronised presses automate dart
flights
Two synchronised bench presses in an automatic production manufacture ribbed dart flights - producing a finished part in either one or two operations.
Worcester Presses, the Stourbridge, West Midlands, UK-based power press manufacturer has supplied a UK based darts equipment manufacturer with a flexible production line to manufacture ribbed dart flights, by synchronising two 60kN (6 tonf) bench presses to work as one allowing the manufacturer to produce a finished part in either one or two operations The customer required a flexible process line capable of producing versions of a product that required either a single press to produce a part or two presses perfectly synchronised to use two operations to produce a part

Straight-sided presses improve die life
Straight sided presses provide improved ram accuracy, which produces a high quality component and also leads to a longer tool life between re-grinds.
After consultations between Worcester Presses and their customer, it was decided to operate the master/slave principal, where the drive system of the second press is connected to the drive of the first press by linking the flywheel to the alloy steel crankshaft.
The clutch for the second press is operated a few strokes after the first press starts and thereby the presses operate as one using a variable speed unit to control the motor of the first press.
Worcester Presses carried out modifications including the uprating of the drive on the first press, a special clutch with one engagement position and reduced flywheel for the second press.

Two 60kN (6 tonf) bench presses linked together provide a larger overall tool area than for a single machine, the utilisation of low cost presses and the flexibility to operate in single or tandem.
The component being manufactured is transferred between the presses using a pneumatic feeder.
These 60kN (6 tonf) bench presses are part of a range of Worcester bench presses ranging from 20-100kN (2-10 tonf), all of which include a range of stroke lengths, ram adjustment and calliper brakes, whilst the flywheel has a hardened steel ring with three equally spaced pick up points for a fast clutch response.
Charles Higgins, managing director for Worcester Presses said: "This is an unusual order, because most people relate power presses to producing metal components parts, whereas they are much more flexible than that and can be applied to numerous products using a wide variety of materials including plastics, polyester, membrane and nylon textured materials, all of which can require pressing, forming, crimping or punching in some form." Worcester Presses equipment is used in a multitude of industries including double glazing, building, electrical and automotive components as well as medical, heating and plumbing equipment.
Worcester Presses is also the exclusive agent for the Chin Fong range of heavy duty presses.
