Ward HiTech has introduced the Famup 5-axis machining centre with linear motor drives for the machining of long workpieces or short ones in a 'pendulum' operation.

Introduced by Ward HiTech at last week's MACH 2008 machine tool exhibition, the Famup modular, high speed moving column and 5-axis machining centre range has linear axis drive motors This moving column high speed vertical machining centre machines either long work pieces or smaller components in a pendelum operation The latter operation uses a programmable centre partition guard so that one side of the machine bed can be used for work piece unloading/loading while machining takes place on the other side, then vice-versa

The linear axis drives allow rapid traverse rates of 60m/min.

The linear drives also ensure greater precision, said Ward HiTech, and circularity tests show a marked improvement over traditional servo motor technology.

Axis travels are X=2000mm, Y=800mm and Z=700mm.

A high speed spindle of 12000 rev/min (optionally 15000rev/min) has a BT40 spindle taper and 35kW main motor are all standard features.

The machine has 30 tool magazine with an automatic tool changer time of 1.5s, tool to tool exchange time.

Ward Hi-Tech said that speed, power and precision are the highlights of the MMV range, which is ideal for aerospace and other high metal removal, high accuracy applications.
