Waters has launched a new AutoPurification System at the 54th ASMS Conference on Mass Spectrometry, May 28-June 1 The system's fluidics layout, enhanced software features and hardware capabilities combined with novel Waters Prep OBD column technology, simplify day-to-day operation and improve the chromatographer's ability to purify and isolate compounds

Purification plays an integral role in the drug discovery and development process, as pure compounds are required for biological screening and characterization.

These laboratories are continually seeking high-throughput solutions to aid the rapid delivery of new drugs to market.

"Waters Corporation has been at the forefront of automated purification with the development of UV-and MS-based autopurification system solutions," said Mary Ellen Goffredo, Director of Product Marketing at Waters.

"Our new AutoPurification System continues that legacy work by incorporating advanced features derived from customer feedback into a new HPLC platform with superior technology and improved usability to handle the full spectrum of purification needs," she said.

Integral to the AutoPurification System is Waters 3100 Mass Detector for mass-directed purification applications.

This ultra-compact, single-quadrupole, atmospheric pressure ionization mass detector is designed for everyday usage with a new level of ease-of-use.

First-of-its-kind IntelliStart Diagnostic Software tunes and calibrates the mass detector and conducts system performance checks.

These automated actions confirm the 3100 Mass Detector's readiness and provides scientists with useful diagnostics, information tracking and documented proof that procedures were followed.

Waters AutoPurfication's instrumentation and software implements a new system fluidics organizer that allows chromatographers to switch up to five columns (three analytical- and two preparative-scale) with a single command.

State-of-the-art sensors monitor each module for leaks, automatically shutting down the entire system if leaks are detected.

Additional software includes the patented Collection Time Delay feature (US 6,997.0314 B2) that automatically calibrates the delay time between detection and collection, and monitoring consumption levels of solvent and accumulated waste.

For the latter, if user-set thresholds are exceeded, the system automatically sends email alerts, viewable across the network.

Scientists can be confident that their systems are running properly even while managing other tasks outside of the lab.

Availability and Configurations Waters AutoPurification System will be available for ordering beginning in the summer of 2006 with shipments starting in September.

The system can be configured for UV/Vis detection with Waters 2996/2487 Detectors, for mass-directed detection with Waters 3100 Mass Detector or for triple detection with 2996/2487 Detectors, 3100 Mass Detector and 2424/2420 Evaporative Light Scattering Detectors.
