Large CNC lathes to be got for attractive prices
Value for money CNC machine tool specialist, XYZ Machine Tools in Devon, has expanded its range of CNC lathes with the introduction of the Vulcan series of turning centres.
One Spanish company, using a sophisticated horizontal machining centre, costing well over half a million pounds sterling and easily capable of tapping, purchased the Fast Tap because they could not justify using a machine costing many thousands for simple tapping when they could equally effectively tap on a machine costing a few hundreds.
The Fast Tap, which can undertake vertical and horizontal tapping up to M24 in both aluminium and steel, is a simple pantographic arm carrying an air motor which will tap both blind and through holes.
A range of spindle speeds with varying torque outputs ensures that it is equally effective in hard and soft metals and also plastics.
Positioning of the tap relative to the hole is fast and simple.
Standard reach is 1200mm, but can easily be extended by up to 500mm if required.
Larger fabrications or plates can be tapped without re-positioning as the tap can be positioned anywhere within a 3400mm circle.
The positive drive principle employed in Fast Tap eliminates push or drag on the workpiece, which can be supported by no more than a straight edge, and thus reduces tooling and fixturing costs.
Fast Tap is also capable of reaming, chamfering, countersinking, spot facing, helicoil insertion and stud making as well as assembly work such as screw and nut driving.
Taps are held in Bilz type quick change tap drivers.
Companies already using the Fast Tap have found taps last much longer than prior to using the machine - one company has reported taps now last over 200% longer.
One company which has purchased eleven Fast Tap machines has found production has increased due to ease of use and reduced operator fatigue and that quality has improved because of the straight vertical entry of the tap into the workpiece.
The company stated that "the overall quality of the Fast Tap system results in almost no downtime and virtually no maintenance".
The company is using the machine to tap holes ranging from M3 to M25 in steel and in aluminium.
