High and consistent standards maintain a
future

High and consistent standards are the only way to safeguard the future, says a subcontract machine shop, an opinion that is reflected in an up-to-date CNC machine tool inventory.

Everything about Carl Corton's sub-contracting and manufacturing business reflects his toolmaking background - a place for everything and everything in its place "Our success has been built on the quality of our work," he says, insisting that only the best will do when dealing with customers, suppliers and employees

"High and consistent standards are the only way to safeguard the future of a company like Quantum Manufacturing," he says, "and we welcome every opportunity to show potential customers what we can do and the environment in which we do it." The 14-employee business provides an unusual combination of services, although its machining expertise, which encompasses the manufacture of precision press tools up to 3000kN capacity from hardened tool steel as well as injection mould tools and jigs and fixtures, has underwritten its long-term success.

Much of this high precision work is carried out on turning, milling and drilling machines supplied by XYZ Machine Tools, augmented with wire eroding, spark eroding and precision grinding.

According to Corton, XYZ machines have become the preferred choice on the basis of ease-of use, reliability, service support and, above all, value for money.

The most recent purchase is a 7.5kW, 70 to 3600 rev/min XYZ SM 5000 CNC/manual bed mill that can accommodate components weighing up to 850kg on its 1930mm by 355mm table.

This joins a XYZ lathe and four XYZ turret mills, with the SM 5000 bed mill, too, allowing the head to be tilted to either side to cater for the drilling of angled holes.

Coupled with the latest generation Prototrak three-axis control, this attribute makes the SM 5000 an ideal machine for the type of work carried out by Quantum Manufacturing, typically complex components in quantities from one-offs to small batches.

Existing customers are predominantly in the automotive, aerospace, domestic appliance and packaging industries, where attention to detail and on-time delivery are prerequisites.

However, Quantum Manufacturing is notable for more than its 5000ft2 pristine premises on the Heathcote Estate on the outskirts of Warwick and Leamington Spa, UK, and the organised procedures that ensure work is completed to schedule and within budget.

In addition to machining to micron tolerances, Corton points out that Quantum Manufacturing offers a fully computerised design service and has for many years manufactured special-purpose machinery.

One example is equipment supplied to Upright Ireland, the manufacturer of Spandeck decking and roofing systems.

The new line has trebled Upright Ireland's production capacity and played a key role in the development of a unique, rivet-less connection between deck and side members.

This allows sections to be slid across scaffold tubes and steel roof members without damage to tube or painted surfaces, and with significantly less handling effort.

As to Quantum Manufacturing's in-house design capability, Corton says customers make use of the CADCAM facility in various ways.

"Some supply us with drawings, on paper or on disk, while for others we start from the finished product or concept and work back to the design necessary to achieve the optimum end result. Request a free brochure from XYZ Machine Tools ...

Either way, I like to be involved with the entire design to manufacture sequence, since it ensures that our customers receive the maximum benefit from our expertise and resource.".
