Affordable machines are easy to program
XYZ Machine Tools will be highlighting examples from its range of affordable and easy to program CNC machine tools at Tooling 2001 on Stand 1162.
The culmination of a joint venture with Advantage West Midlands and the Learning and Skills Council, the new centre provides students and employers with an engineering resource tailored to the modern-day requirements of industry, from basic skills training through to more advanced qualifications such as a Higher National Diploma or foundation degree.
"It is in all our interests to encourage young people into engineering," says Gowdy.
"The more involvement individual companies have with this new Centre the better will be the curriculum and the better the credentials of the students leaving here." Top of the list of tasks entrusted to John Vardy, Programme Leader (Mechanical and Electrical Engineering), has been the specification and layout of the machine tools and related equipment in the engineering workshop area.

Turning centres are competitively priced
XYZ Machine Tools is launching a range of competitively priced turning centres, designed for profitable mass production, to complement its range of Proturn lathes.
A major priority has been to position 30 machine tools - all but one supplied by XYZ Machine Tools of Tiverton, Devon, UK - so as to balance the most effective use of the space available with strict compliance with health and safety legislation.
Every machine tool is equipped with appropriate guarding and emergency cut-offs as well as an audio/visual alarm to allow instant identification of any potential problem.
A CAD/CAM suite situated on a mezzanine floor above the workshop area houses a dozen interlinked computer stations where students learn the intricacies of computer-aided design and create machining programs.
Once checked and verified, completed programs may be downloaded via an RS 232 link to any one of four CNC machines.
These CNC machines include an XYZ Mini Mill 560 compact vertical machining centre and an XYZ 200 TC turning centre featuring a full c axis and driven tool capability, together with an XYZ VM 3500 bed mill.
The machining and turning centres are equipped with Siemens conversational controls while the bed mill is equipped with the easy-to-use ProtoTRAK manual/CNC system.
The workshop also houses 10 XYZ lathes and nine XYZ turret mills, all equipped with digital readouts, as well as drilling machines, a guillotine and a horizontal bandsaw.
"The intention behind this investment is not solely to increase the number of engineering students attending this college," says Gowdy. Request free introductory details about products from XYZ Machine Tools ...
