Machining parts for ceramic-to-metal
seals
Two used manual/CNC machine tools are enjoying a new lease of life machining ceramic components and metal inserts for vacuum-tight ceramic to metal seals.
Two used manual/CNC machine tools are enjoying a new lease of life on the five acre Castle Works, Stafford site of Advanced Ceramics, where they are machining ceramic components and the metal inserts that are required, for example, in the manufacture of vacuum-tight ceramic to metal seals Both machines - an XYZ ProTURN 1440 lathe and an XYZ DPM bed mill - were purchased last year by ACL, having been refurbished by XYZ Machine Tools

Large CNC lathes to be got for attractive prices
Value for money CNC machine tool specialist, XYZ Machine Tools in Devon, has expanded its range of CNC lathes with the introduction of the Vulcan series of turning centres.
Since then, says Kevin Cain, ACL's production manager, "we have not encountered any problems, either with the machines themselves or with the ProtoTRAK control systems".
Following a major extension to XYZ's Tiverton, Devon headquarters, a wide choice of used machines is now housed in a separate demonstration and display area.
Installation and after-sales service, confirms XYZ managing director Nigel Atherton, are subject to the same high standards that apply to new machine purchases and a 'no quibble' guarantee is also part of the package.
Formerly known as GEC Alsthom Ceramics, ACL commenced trading in February 1993 and produces a wide range of ceramics, glass ceramics and glass components.
The company's willingness to work in close partnership with customers, allied to stringent quality control procedures, has resulted in a steadily increasing demand for its design and manufacturing expertise.
Material throughput now extends to several hundred tonnes per year, although prior to installing the two XYZ manual/CNC machines, components and inserts were being machined on manually operated machine tools.
Although ACL was increasingly aware of the limitations this imposed, buying new CNC machines would, according to Cain, "have been an expensive option and difficult to justify".
However, he continues, the decision to purchase the XYZ machines has proved to be a wise one.
"We machine components in varying batch quantities, from one-offs and prototypes to as many as a 1000-off, and we have found these manual/CNC machines ideal for this variety of work". Request a free brochure from XYZ Machine Tools ...
"They have provided a safe and cost-effective route into CNC and, following the initial two-day training, one day for each machine, the ProtoTRAK controls have proved extremely easy to program.".
